I ran that series in 1996, 1997 and 1998. At the time there were 4 series (Florida, West Coast, Mid-West, and East Coast) each with 40 to 80 entries a weekend (3 to 5 groups of 12 to 16 cars each race). I'm sad that see that there is only 1 series and that they don't have any where close to the number of entries.
I was racing at Laguna Seca once a month at one point and there was never less then 65 drivers paying $2,400 for 3-days race weekend. When they started charging $4,000 people went else where.
1/2 the guys who won races in Grand-Am over the years started in the 2-liter series. Also, a lot of Indy Car drivers, like RHR.

Actually, the Winter and Championship Series are two distinct championships in different regions. The reduction in numbers could said for pretty much any series out there, mainly due to economic reasons. While it's regrettable that prices have gone up over time, have you tried checking an inflation table?
They're offering a $200k scholarship to the shootout winner this year (which doesn't have to be used for an open wheel series).
