The best FF?

We've had the best looking ff car ever but what is actually the BEST car?
Entries open to cars with Kent, Zetec and Duratec engines.

I think that the Swift SC92 and the Mygale Sj01 are the best cars.

youngoldy has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
1988 Van Diemen for me folks, super quick car, well for the eighties anyway!

A one minute 04.28 on Oulton Fosters! Why own a Raynard!

Best ever? Has to be the Van Diemen RF80. Traces its lineage back through the Crossle 25F to the Lotus 69. The ultimate expression of what Formula Ford 1600 was meant to be. Cheap to build, cheap to run, easy to drive and suited all shapes and sizes of driver. If the MSA had dug their heels in, we'd never have "progressed" to the modern cars, and we'd still have 100+ fields of self-run cars, where chequebooks didn't unduly influence the outcome.....!
Imagine an RF80, updated with a Duratec/LD200 and spec treaded tyres. Who wouldn't want to drive that? Ah, nostalgia. It's not what it used to be....

New Ray soon as I saw it had to have one.

Looks the best with the bonnet and back off too.

John, just wondered if you could expand on why you think the SC94 is so good?

Roomy, chassis design is excellent with the triangulation just right, easy to drive in all conditions and pleasant to work on - and one of the last narrow cars before the (1996?) wide sidepods came in. If there was a decent spares service I'd still have one.

Was a good looking car too, especially following on from the incredibly ugly SC93.

The SC95 was good too but not quite so good as the SC94 as they switched to some less rigid square tubing to save about £50/chassis on construction costs.

Only shortcoming was the front design was a bit of a ****er when you went off as it always sunk into the gravel and filled up. Also shagged the floor if you went off too often.

Just my opinion of course.

you guys all name kents, is this because u drive/drove them? I loved the sc95 btw. Back in those days my dad used to go to the swift workshop and build his own cars there. This resulted in the SC98 with a completely different rear suspension assembly. quick car too, the sc98, Swift really rocked the 90's didnt they

Nelson, we only name the true, proper FFs.

There are some modern ones too that are very nice.

There are some really nice looking modern FF's around. The economy of the bodywork around the chassis makes them look great and fast standing still.

I always thought the Swift 88 and 89 looked good with the darts in the side panels for the centre mounted radiator behind the driver.

As for ability, you can't really argue much with the SC'92. Anyone that has been quick through Formula Ford has usually driven an SC'92 at some point. Dempsey being one. Gary Jones and Alan Pike won North West Championships in them and Gavin Wills swore by his before going onto newer equipment.

When you get the bodywork off the SC'92, it is very easy to work on and nothing is over complicated on it.

Personally speaking, I've never had one. Even when I was less portly, I could never get in one. You need to be the size of a jockey with no shoulders to be comfortable in one. If your over 6ft, forget it.......

Who was the works drivers in '92??? Was one Magnusson or am I ahead of myself??

Steven Jensen is comfortably over 6ft and he seems to have done reasonably well in an SC92 this year.

Jamie Spence / Neil Cunningham were main drivers for factory in 92. Magnusson drove for Foundation.

History must show the best FF surely has to be the Mygale 03 - current.....has wiped the floor with the opposition for a period longer than any other chassis.

My choice: RF91 or RF01.

Magnusson taking the lead of the festival final around the outside of Paddock must have been 0.1% off binning the way it slipped and skated about.....no one done that before or since to my knolledge
