wodonnell should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
1958 French GP

According to all the info I can find on this race, Stuart Lewis Evans and Tony Brooks shared a Vanwall in this race. The car retired after 35 laps (maybe 37!).

I need to know:

a) if the car retired after 35 or 37 laps, and
b) how many laps each driver completed of these 35 (or 37)

Can anybody help?!

Wayne.

This might be better off in the Historic area

1958 is well before most current F1 fans were born, or even though of.

you are right. Didn't you know F1 started in 1997?

I'll move it, but first, some info about the French GP at Reims in 1958. Which was ran over 50 laps (nearly 260 miles- not your namby pamby regimented 195mile jobs!)

It was 35 laps, retired with engine problems. The car started 10th on the grid.

(BTW Roy Slavadori completed 37 laps, but wasn't classified in his Cooper).

I was mislead by the forum titles! I guessed (wrongly) that Historic Racing was like the "Goodwood Revival" type stuff.

I got the figure 37 from one of my reference books although I currently had the 35 lap figure/engine failure in my own records.

I already had the info on Salvadori (thanks for confirming it).

I just need the actual number of laps run by these 2 in the #12 car then I can correct my overall stats for total laps run by each driver.

Well this is like 'Goodwood Revival' type stuff after all.
Those above in F1 had grandad's born after 1958.

Just wait awhile and the learned keepers of this forum will awake and dust off their halo'd copy's of Motor Sport / Autosport and creak into action............

Frankly, we talk a lot about old F1 in the F1 forum, but anything older than the 90s is best served here because appear to have not even heard of the likes of Amon, Clark, Surtees, Ascari (etc, etc, etc...)!

Tony Brooks reired his original car after 16 laps with gearbo problems after starting fifth.

I dusted off Motor Sport for August 1958, but it doesn't say! However, according to the lap chart in Sheldon, Lewis-Evans' car lost four places between laps 20 and 21, so I think that's your answer. Retirement is shown as on lap 35.

That makes sense if Brooks retired his original car on lap 16.

So would you say I am fairly safe to assume that Lewis-Evans pitted and handed over after completing lap 20?

ie, Lewis-Evans ran 1-20, then Brooks took over and ran to 35, his engine failing on his 36th lap?

wodonnell,

FORIX stats says in the Classification of 1958 France GP that the Vanwall #12 car of Lewis-Evans/Brooks retired after complete lap 35 for engine problems. Lewis-Evans raced the 20 first laps and Brooks the last 15.

About your doubts, I think you are right, Lewis-Evans pitted after completing lap 20 to give his seat to Brooks. The engine of the Vanwall surely failed during the 36th lap. FORIX policy about laps in final classification is there are considered the number of laps completed, because that you could found there when a driver retired in his first lap, in the classification the number of laps is 0.

Thanks for the info.

That gives me what I needed to finish the stats on my own site now.
