2007 rules

Was just thinking today, who thinks for the all now 2007 F1 there should build the cars to run on ovals as well, and get a couple of oval racing in the calendar.

I was all against oval racing until I started to watch champcars a few years back and you get more over taking in one champcar races then you do in one whole year of F1 racing

Oval racing is great - I love watching IRL races.

But it does not have a place in Formula One, in my opinion.

The day they introduce ovals in F1 is the day I stop watching it. Keep it for the good ol boys in Nascar and irl, please.

Well they use half the oval at Indy and you can't really say that it makes great racing, although admittedly the cars aren't set up for a complete oval race.

The best races this year have been Silverstone and SPA amongst others where there are a variety of corners.

I agree with KB - ovals have no place in F1.

Wasn't the Indianapolis 500 an F1 round in the '50s?

I don't think it was part of the F1 world championship, the teams just enterred it as an extra (prestigeous) race.

I remember a guy who won the 500 and only entered that race and finished quite highly up in the championship standings so it must have been.

Oval racing is wonderful.....and I love nothing more than the Indy 500, which is the worlds greatest race IMO.

But F1 shouldn't go to ovals. It wouldn't suit and it wouldn't have the same magic as it does in America.

No it wouldn't and with the IRL, Champcars, NASCAR and co it would be pointless having it in the U.S. even Europe I doubt it would catch on.

Plus the future rules would have to be re-written aloying Speedway configuratiions and the weight would have to be added etc to make it safer.
And how much would that cost then.....

It was an actual F1 championship event from 1950 untill 1960.

It wrapped round the existing track, rejoining where the parabolica is now I think? And it went over the bridge leading to Ascari curves?

No, it was.
For example, Jim Rathmann won the 1960 Indy 500, thereby getting 8 points, in the only F1 event he entered and ended an equal 8th in the championship with 8 points, together with Jim Clark and Richie Ginther.

That makes me conclude that it is a championship event.

I've looked in my encyclopedia thingy........Rathmann is in the championship with 8 points (joint 8th), but the Indy 500 is not listed as an event on the calendar, suggesting it was non-championship.

Hmmm......why allocate points then?

also rodger ward entered(and won) the 1959 indy 500, and the 1959 us gp(in an offenhauser midget car), which makes him one of the few drivers to enter the 500 and a gp in the years that the 500 counted towards the championship. also before alonso won last year at hungary bruce mclaren was the youngest winner of a gp, but troy ruttmann was the youngest winner of a world championship race, the 1952 indy 500.
