Toj F3

Anyone know what happened to them?

I believe two models built: F301 and F302.

The F302 was quite succesfull as it won the german championship. They don't look to bad either.

They might be related to the toj formel vau car as from the photos I have they look pretty much the same.

Anyone?

From what I've heard here on the forum about the F2 Tojs and sports cars they shared parts with Modus/GRD. I believe it was mostly uprights and sort of thing. So I assume these F3 cars used these as well to keep costs down. However I came across a nice article lately on the F202 with a photo of the tub actually being build in the Toj factory.

I did indeed tried to ask him a while ago to ask him about the sports cars, but no reply. I will try again though.

TOJ F2 and F3's

I contacted Jorg Obermoser last year he told me the following

TOJ built 10 to 12 Formula 3 cars. Their factory driver was
Peter Scharmann from Austria, he won the German F3 International Championship.

They also built 6 F201 Formula 2's, 4 for customers and 2 for Keke Rosberg who was, in 1976, the works driver for a year and a half. The spare car was driven at times by Hans Heyer. When Keke left at the beginning 77 they built a complete new F2 called the F202. only two cars were built, one for Rolf Stommelen and one for Danny Sullivan, both where factory drivers, but Danny had to stop after two races because he run out of money.

Both of the F202's are here in Canada along with an incomplete spare chassis. They belong to Bob Storz.

The two Rosberg cars are in Germany I'm told. Chassis # 2 is with Wolfgang Mathai.
I have chassis number 3.
No idea where the remaining 3 F201's are or any of the F3 cars.

I suspect the 4 'customer' 1976 cars were bought for Climbing, I don't recall any such in F2 at that time, other than the works ones. Eugen Grupp tried to qualify one car for F2/Aurora in 1977-78 IIRC.

Dan, I think you are correct.
The Waggonpass for my car shows entry in a couple of European F2 events (Ulm and Hocknheim) but the car was used mostly for hillclimbing after that.

I emailed Jorg obermoser about a week ago but still no reply, maybe he's ill? It does on the website that he is a diabetic. And another strange thing is that some of the new scale models he announced for May are still not on his website????

anyone?

Well I got an email of Jorg Obermoser today and he confirmed that 10 were built. But he has absolutely no idea where they are now.

So it seems we're stuck.

Here an old discussion on the TOJs.

I was wondering if some a moderator could change the title of the thread to: "Toj F2/F3/F VAU' or something like that. As it seems we could have a broader interest here than only the F3 cars.

Btw. I remember having some footage around of 70s racing in germany with, wait for it, a toj F3!

Jorg Obermoser kept up a relationship w/ Jo Marquart over the years and over the years bought a number of GRD and Modus cars from those works. The Modus records I've seen show a number of Modus sold to Obermoser, presumably sold by him as TOJ.

Chris Witty wrote a nice acticle for Autosport on a visit to the Modus works. One photo in that article shows a sport racer being built at Watton and yet I've never seen a Modus sports racer. I have looked over TOJ SRs and although the tub doesn't look very Modus-like, the suspension uprights are all Modus items.

I believe that most of the Moduses [Modi?] sold via Obermoser were raced as Moduses.
This is certainly the case with Scharmann's early FSV [probably chassis 002] and with the F3 cars driven by Kottulinsky, Lamby and Arens in 1975.
It might be that the 1976 cars are the ones that double up as TOJ. The cars in question would be 033 shown as consigned to Obermoser in March 76 and 035 and 036, shown as F3 but with no customer.

Agree that there are no sports racers in the Modus records, suggesting a bit of fabrication was going on for someone else, and I believe Dud Moseley's conversion of chassis 001 was carried out at home after the works had folded.

Was the Scharmann car the one featured in the 1976 (ish) Top Trumps series ? In full Obermoser/Warsteiner colours, it was described as a TOJ, but looked like an M1 to me.

Dan

Scharmann had several Moduses I think. The one I was referring to, that was definitely called a Modus, was an M2 raced in 1974 and a very early build. I think that it might have been replaced with a new M2 in 1975. I haven't got as far as 1976 with F3 research yet.

I will ask Herr Obermoser if he can confirm if the F3 cars were built by himself or partly by modus, in my best german of course . A photo of scharmann in F3 Warsteiner did show up on ebay a while ago and on the video footage I have you can clearly see team Warsteiner Jörg Obermoser written on the side.

The footage was taken on which I believe is the 'schauinsland' hill climb. I couldn't believe my eyes when I first saw it; Joest Porsche sports cars, TOJ sports cars with Mario Ketterer close-ups of the drivers and the TOJ based Lotus Europa group 5 car which Harald Ertl drove in DRM. I've been trying to contact the guy who sold the footage to me but it seems he doesn't do after-sales service. Still had no reply

Does anyone have any records for the 1976 or 1977 schauinsland hill climbs? This could have some interesting leads in it, well at least for me it would!

SS02

On a related topic are there any experts on the SS02 out there? These cars were GRD based i think and ran with various engines including a BMW M12. Does anyone know how many were made etc?

Two SS02s were built by Jorg Obermoser in 1974, one for him and the other one for Dave Walker. The cars used GRD S73 chassis with some modifications and special bodywork.

The guy that has the most compete knowledge of Toj cars is Guido Enderle. He is a fantatical German who reveres the marque. I know he has a 2L car as does Ian Giles and Nik Snoek.

If you need contact details let me know
cheers

Good to see this thread finally has some new additions! Good to see the Toj (or modus) F3 in the other thread. Does this mean that all the F3 Toj cars were actually a Modus?
