British F3 - Round 5 - Nürburgring

British F3 moves back to Europe for the next three meetings and the first is at the Nürburgring this weekend. The circuit to be used will be the F1 version - last time BF3 went there in 2005 they used the MotoGP circuit with the less tight chicane. Bruno Senna set pole position and chased that year's champion, Alvaro Parente, all the way to the line.

This is the timetable:

Friday, July 1
09:35 - 10:20 Free Practice 1
14:00 - 14:45 Free Practice 2

Saturday, July 2
10:25 - 10:55 Qualifying for Races 1 and 3
15:25 - 15.55 Race One

Sunday, July 3
10:35 - 10:55 Race Two
14:00 - 14:40 Race Three

The main race will be the AvD 100 Meilen. Formula 2 will also be there.

Meeting preview.

The boys from Brazil, Felipe Nasr and Lucas Foresti will shine, but so should Kevin Magnussen, who knows the circuit from his time in German F3 last year.

Valker should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
For live timing you have to download and install a small program (link on SDO-SportTiming site or direct link here)

It's a Windows binary but runs fine on Linux (under Wine) too.

After starting up the program, you'll see a screen asking to select a circuit. There's no Nürburgring, so click "SDO Timing" and the timing screen will open.

Not Nürburgring related but British F3 related:
Hispania has confirmed that the 2009 Cooper Tires British Formula 3 Champion, Daniel Ricciardo, will make his Formula 1 racing debut in one of its cars at the British Grand Prix.

Thanks, Valker, that's excellent!

Nasr is setting the pace again in Free Practice 2, but it still doesn't sound to be totally dry, although the times are much faster.

Kevin Magnussen held of Felipe Nasr to win the the first race at the 'ring. The pair were always close but pulled 12 seconds clear of third-placed Harry Tincknell, who made a demon start from 8th on the grid.

Magnussen did the hat-trick of pole position, race win and fastest lap. He badly needed another win, but Nasr will be pleased to have extended his points lead as Lucas Foresti was back in 10th.

Jack Harvey has won the partly reversed grid race 2 at the Nurburgring for a welcome maiden victory with fastest lap as well. Felipe Nasr was 4th to extend his points lead further. Kevin Magnussen was 6th, but both of them will have kept their best remaining tyres for the feature race, which starts in not much more than half an hour and they are again side by side side (sort of) on the front row of the grid.

Race 2 results - 10 laps:

Code:
Pos Driver Team/Car Time/Gap
 1. Jack Harvey Carlin Dallara-VW 21m18.954s

 3. Pedro Nunes Hitech Dallara-VW + 6.910s
 4. Felipe Nasr Carlin Dallara-VW + 7.319s
 5. Jazeman Jaafar Carlin Dallara-VW + 10.021s

Breaking news: Felipe Nasr has just won the feature race at the Nurburgring. Kevin Magnussen led from the start until slowed by a misfire with two laps to go and then dropped to 5th at the flag. It's about time Carlin or VW found some reliability for his car.

Hylkema took the Rookie class. The podium was filled by da Costa and Huertas. Lots of changes and chases in the final laps!

Race 3 deserves a report and the results. Felt really sorry for Kevin Magnussen. He was the fastest driver all weekend and made no mistakes.

It seems that the engine misfire that robbed Kevin Magnussen of a win in the feature race at the Nurburgring was down to a simple spark plug failure. How annoying is that?

VW have responded at last and are mounting a full-scale investigation.

Thinking about this some more, I don't buy into the spark plug theory. What the article says is:
Quote:
Now, top engineers within VW are set to examine the recurrent electrical problems suffered by Magnussen's Carlin team. As well as Magnussen's three failures, the Dane's team-mates Jack Harvey, Rupert Svendsen-Cook and Jazeman Jaafar have also suffered similar misfires related to spark plug and coil issues.
So there are coil issues as well and you wouldn't put your top engineers on the case if it were just spark plugs. It sounds more like an engine mapping issue to me.

That's true. I can't remember if I've mentioned this before but for the past couple of years use of the engines in BF3 has been supervised by NBE, who previously built and maintained the excellent Mugen-Honda engines. Suddenly it was given back to Spiess this year. That's a fact. Anything else is conjecture.
