Alexander Matveev should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Hello!

The WTCC Race of Russia on Moscow Raceway this weekend will be accompanied by the first round of a Moscow Classic Grand Prix, as well as the first round of a revived Cup of Peace and Friendship (this was a series run among the socialist countries in many categories). The absolute majority of cars will be the Soviet classics. While in touring car classes most (if not all) of the cars are modern replicas built in accordance with historic regulations (Lada 1300, Lada 1600, Volga divided into two classes by engine type and Moskvich), there are also two formula classes (Formula 1300 and Formula 1600) that in common will feature around 26 historic single-seaters, mostly Estonia 21M and 21.10 models, but also Estonia 25, Estonia 25.20, Estonia 15, Estonia 18, Estonia 20, Rukuts 3, Czechoslovak MTX 1-06 and a couple of period European formulae which appeared here or there on the Soviet and early post-Soviet tracks: Reynard 893 and Van Diemen RF94. In a time-attack mode a replica of a 1956 Pobeda Sport will also make an appearance. Given there will also be a historic cars exhibition, I can suggest someone could bring a couple of other historic racers, which reside in Moscow or around. A number of that era drivers will participate at the wheel of the historic cars as well. The drivers come from Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Moldova and Germany. All in all, I suppose this event might be of interest for some of you. I will be there picturing the event, and will issue the report with, hopefully, some details on a number of formula cars, as I got in touch with their owners and builders.

The information about the event (albeit only in Russian, as far as I could see) is on the organisers' website:
moscowclassicgp.ru

The full calendar is as follows:

June 12-13 - Moscow Raceway, Moscow, Russia (MCGP Rd1, CPF Rd1)
July 4 - Moscow Raceway, Moscow, Russia (MCGP Rd2)
July 30 - Bikernieki, Riga, Latvia (MCGP Rd3, CPF Rd2)
September 26 - Moscow Raceway, Moscow, Russia (MCGP Rd4)

delta, you're welcome. Moreover, I believe that the organizers usually have a car or two for rent. The field consists 90% of Soviet cars (and that's the idea behind the project lately), but surely it would be very interesting to watch them racing against comparable Western cars.

Oh, and the final (3rd, as July 30 was only CPF as it appeared) round of MCGP has been moved from Sep 26 to October, 1-2 - this coming weekend.

Here is what happened earlier this year:

Riga looks like a very nice place to race. I wonder if they would accept a Historic Formula Ford on to the grid Those Estonias are fantastic looking cars too

When at the last round of the MCGP this weekend we've been told by the organizers that next year Riga will be retained as a track for one of the four rounds of the Cup of Peace and Friendship. In common there will be 2 rounds in Russia (Moscow Raceway around June, 12 and, most probably, NRing near Nizhniy Novgorod - the motherland of Volga) and 2 rounds in Baltic states (Bikernieki in Riga and 'TBA', but I suppose that could be Parnu Ring aka Auto24ring in Estonia, which hosts the rounds of very similar Baltic historic series called Dzintara Aplis). Bikernieki is an amazing track indeed, and said to be demanding for a driver.

As for Formula Ford, no idea, sadly I think there is also a place for an unclassified run among the participants. Not sure it would be possible for the organizers to attract the whole field of FF or similar cars right away, and it's a good question of how close they could be to, say, F1600/Mondial that we had here. To me it would be some kind of an answer to a very old question

All I know is that MCGP guys are always open to attracting new participants and are willing to make a good show.

As for Estonia cars, I am currently preparing a series of articles about those cars which took part in MCGP events this year, so I would gladly share them somewhere here when they are ready if the forum rules permit.

No problem, always happy to read about other types of cars as long as it's historic.
