Formulahistory should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
F1 statistics finale 2016

It's the 30th time that the F1 title is decided in the finale.
How often was the man champion going into the finale as leader of the points table and how often was another driver beating the points leader?

Are there some exciting stats about this year's finale?

Hamilton has to catch 12 points more than Rosberg - as he did 4 times this year: Monaco, Canada, Austria and Germany

There are 507 possible result combinations - in 455 Rosberg will be champion, in 52 Hamilton.

With 21 races it's the longest season in formula 1. In any other of the 67 years before the F1 season would be over after 20 races or less. And who would than be champion?
Just in 9 cases Hamilton (as he was leader from round 11 to round 14 and just 9 seasons had between 11 and 14 races), 58 Mal Rosberg

How often was a driver champion without leading the championship the most times during the season?

Any more interesting stats?

not exactly a stat, but im always curious to know where the championship battle would be under previous points systems.

some stats here:

https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/f...4th-track.html

Brazil was the 24th track LH has won on and i think i read somewhere else (cant find it now) of the 21 GP on the calendar this year he has a win at all of them except Baku (obviously not all in this year of course).

I'm glad you asked. I've been running a personal spreadsheet for the last few seasons to monitor this.

Top six points system -
Rosberg 131pts
Hamilton 126pts
Ricciardo 66
Verstappen 51
Vettel 51
Raikkonen 42
Perez 15
Bottas 13
Massa 5
Alonso 5

In this system, Rosberg needs at least 2nd if Hamilton wins. A third place wouldn't suffice (different to the top 10 points system). Hamilton needs at least 2nd place to win the title.

Top eight points system -
Rosberg 150
Hamilton 144
Ricciardo 101
Vettel 81
Verstappen 78
Raikkonen 72
Perez 33
Bottas 28
Hulkenberg 21
Alonso 19

Slightly different story, whereby a third place for Rosberg with Hamilton winning would see Rosberg take the title 156-154. A fourth place would also be enough for the title. Hamilton must finish at least third in this system.

Interestingly, Hulkenberg jumps from 4pts in the top 6 system to 21pts in the top 8, courtesy of the 5x7 place finishes this year.

The most interesting statistics will be if Rosberg fails to finish the race through an engine failure, how many millions of internet conspiracy theorists will claim some sort of conspiracy theory to get LH to the championship.

I suspect close on 100%.

Bernie and Charlie are quite chummy with Lewis, so it's not too far-fetched.

Three circuits that are no longer on the calendar he's raced on, but never won are Valencia, India and Korea (but then only Vettel won at India)
