Is it really true that an ace driver can't be competitive with an older, basic Mustang or Monaro? Having not seen aces take the wheel of such things, isn't it premature to say that the big budgets can't be overcome with good driving?
It is possible that a great driver in a basic car can be competitive against a basic driver in a great car. But if you look at the pointy end of the grid, you have Bowe in the best Torana, Steve Richards in the best Mustang...just those two alone have to make life hard for the others.

Hard to see the commercial return on a $250k annual spend plus the cost of building the car, as some at the front are apparently outlaying...

Some are reportedly spending in the vicinity of $350K a year, on top of the build of the car.

What would the bare minimum cost be when employing a paid staff or professional racing team to prepare the car, with no development and stretching the components to their maximum mileage?

It's not really fair to compare with volunteer crewed (or NO crew! :P ) cars, towed around the country by the owner-driver behind their Hilux on a trailer ala some 86 series, Improved Production or second-string Porsche series runners.

According to the TCM website the 2017 TCM series finished at Bathurst.

Is that correct?

Touring Car Masters

Home page is counting down to Round 7.

I think if you were using the page called 2017 , it mentions a Round 7 at the bottom, but it is not very clear

Latest ACM mag, says there has been a request to allow a "tru blu" xd in. Of course that also means moving the cut off date, allowing VB commy, RX7 etc

Thoughts?

Good, I think. They will soon be into the turbos, which will be a lot of fun.

Any grumbles from the Group C/A chaps?

Isn't the plan at the moment just for the XD, and for the amount of XD's to be capped at 5?

Be a brave move for TCM if they started letting teams loose with turbo development and so on

I don't think Group C/A would worry, the TCM cars aren't the real things.

TCM really suffer at these supercar meetings such as Newcastle.

All they got today was20 minutes of practice, then have to sit around for rest of day.

Why do minor categories such as Aussie race cars and T86’s each get 40 minutes, that is double that of TCM.

And look at the fluff that Supercars have on the list for the last hours of the day.....

TCM run 2 races on the weekend, the others you mention run 3. If you look at the whole 3 day schedule it appears that TCM gets as many practice sessions as the others, just one less race.

Because they "have to" owing to considerations of their arrangement with Supercars?

I imagine competitors in both TCM and 86 series would prefer not to race on these types of circuits where damage is likely.
