Just from a mental image I have there was the 'splitter' below the front valance, bigger wheels & specific alloys, mudguards as standard those striking stripes on the bonnet and bottom of the flanks on this model?

Some of the Group A race & rally cars even kept that standard paint scheme in competition, like Rob Hall and Jock Robertson's BTCC cars and the one make rally series IIRC?

There was a certain amount of body stiffening and other things such as moving the battery box. I do remember it wasn't a straight forward parts swap when we did it but then again it was originally a hand built car so nothing is easy is it.

RS1600 or XR3 a total waste of time in CTCRC Group 1 if you want my opinion, if you dont ask Dave Howard who took one out at our Lydden Hill meeting he came almost last and hated the thing and he is a good driver and the car was as good as it could be. Why lug around the extra weight when you can race the lighter Xr2 with the same running gear.

The Brooklyn Ford RS1600i driven by its original Driver Chris Hodgetts, was at Silverstone on track, and gave cars with 400bhp+ a run for their money.. in one lap He over took 12 cars... by lap 6 he was in the top 5....
not all Mk3 Escorts are laim.

Not saying they are neccessarily lame, all I am saying is CTCRC is not BTCC and in CTCRC races the Fiesta is allowed so why race an XR3 when you could race an XR2 which will be lighter and more nimbler and hence quicker.

yes fair comment.. to be honest I do not drive any of them.... Milk Float I can handle ;-)

A lot of money was put into these cars.. the Brooklyn car cost over £30k in 1985 Datapost was just over £25k in 1984.. thats the differance between the priveteer and the Works Backed Teams I guess....

You Mentioned Lydden... there is a chap with a Datapost Mk3 doing the Classic Touring car series.. How is he getting on?

The RS1600i might not work in modern group 1 historic racing but having a look in Jeremy Waltons "RS the faster Fords" it was never intended for this use. It was conceived by Ford Motorsport in Germany (Köln/Cologne I presume) and initially only intended to be produced in 5.000 units to be eligeble for the new group N and A regulations. Surprise sales meant that a total of 8,659 cars were produced before the end of production in late 1983. This, on the other hand, meant homologation ran out after 31 December, 1988.

Here in Denmark we have a very succesfull group N-based series run to a power-to-weight ratio. Back when it started in 1982 it was set at 8 kgs for 1 bhp (don't know how to translate that to bhp/ton). The XR3 was eligeble for '82 while the XR3i was introduced for '83. When the Escort Mk. III ended its welcome in the series in 1986 only one driver ever went the RS1600i route - and he was a Ford sales man anyway, the name being Benny Hall. All other drivers shyed away from the extra 10 bhp because it would put an exstra 80 kgs into the car. The scarcity of the RS1600i might also have contributed, as I never recall to have seen a road going car in the country.

It doesnt go bad but not really on the pace for the class, I think its a clone as well not sure. The XR3 raced at Lydden (a different one) was on loan from Neil Bray and is as far as it goes a well developed car and in tha hands of a fast driver although he is a rear wheel drive man and he just couldnt get on the pace with it, I lapped him in the Chevy while stuck in 2nd gear although admittedly he had lost the fron screen in qually and had to remove the front and rear one to race so I guess that didnt help :-).

Thanks for the up date Al.. no its isnt a Longman Car... even tho it did have or still has Richard Longmans name on it..
The Brooklyn outputs 164bhp at the wheels @ 6.5k and it weighs just over 700kg without driver.. not sure on the Datapost car yet.. as it hasnt been set up.. Richard Longman built a new engine for it back in the Summer.. he will be setting it up in the Spring. I am hoping it will be less 'aggressive' than the Brooklyn.

Just wanted to say in response to Al's comments that I am quite sure that if a pukka Grp A RS1600i with a decent driver came out to play it would hardly be 'slow' in a classic series against random mildly modified XR2's!!!

Trouble is as you've said about the Vitesses that owners would be reluctant to bend them!

I have raced against pukka RS1600's in the ModProds and trust me they couldnt catch an HT Racing engined XR2. Anyhow who was talking about a mildly modified XR2 I meant like for like in the same state of tune.

No the CTCRC/Autoglym Lydden Hill Historic Festival event. The car is owned by Steve Yates but as I said I am not sure its a pukka one. DOnt forget the CTCRC is not really Group 1 more like Group 1.5 so more latitude available to bring a standard car up to spec, Group N it definitely aint! Also it isnt Group 2/A either so maybe some things on the original race car may not be allowed eg. rose joints everywhere etc.

AL,
Yes I know of Steve Yates.. he asked me about the decals for the car.. "DATAPOST"... Shame he had a DNF.. Dont like to hear that with respect to Mk3 Escorts... yes I think you are right with respect to rose joints etc... but they are eligable for the Silverstone Classic.... perhaps one day I should attend.. not to drive may be Chris or Richard... then I can age 10 years in 30 minuits.. already 150 years old ;-)
