regarding the reliability, it's not just basic breakdowns and electrical farts (hi, mercedes), it's getting the lifing (is that even a word) right for parts, predicting hot bits, cold bits, stuff that will bend, stuff that won't bend, the whole science is incredible.

and yet we still haven't worked out how to get a road car to warm up before you actually get to work in the mornings

From what the bbc are saying it looks like the reason he went off is related to a rear suspension problem (so it pitched him off the circuit rather than him just binning it). They're going to have to re-test the parts on test rigs before going back out on track - it may need a modification to a suspension component.

Whilst Mercedes have a "wiring loom problem" - also known as "the wiring loom was too close to something hot and melted / caught fire"

Not too long ago, Mercedes having a "wiring loom problem", might have meant that a piston had gone through it.

Much more reliable though, these days.

read as "make them stronger so he has to crash harder to break it next time"? no, that's being unnecessarily mean. for all his erm, 'career related discussion points' he's actually a pretty sensible driver.

i wonder if teams have a backup plan in that kind of situation - last year's chassis as a spare to get more mileage on certain modifications, for example?

Button, Grosjean and Hulkenberg all seem to be quite happy with their cars. Marussia are expected to find a solution overnight to their suspension problems. Caterham and STR seem relatively happy with their cars. Webber wants understeer curing. A chink in the armour?! Massa was blown away by Button's fastest lap. Now if they could just get on top of those fiddly reliability issues, McLaren could be in with a shout, again.

Hamilton was going quite well in the Merc, but he's binned it at the 'Dry Sack' corner. He's fine, but his car looks a little bit bent.

He came across as a Button fan IMO.

So Mercedes has revealed loss of rear brake pressure caused the accident. Two mechanical failures already. I was hoping reliability would at least be bettered this season, ominous start.

Hamilton said that he was quite happy with the Merc, but adds: "We need more aero, definitely. I definitely notice the difference" (to McLaren)

Webber reckons that Red Bull are further ahead with the car than they were last season. The Lotus was very quick again. Marrusia only did a few laps. Lots of mid-field cars seem to be surprisingly quick. Ferrari don't seem to be too bad, but they're not getting talked about very much. hmmmm.
