Close finishes
This picture, from the 1960 Australian Grand Prix at Lowood (Queensland), shows a finish recorded as being 1/20 of a second, the cars coming over the line at about 140mph or so on the broad (ex-bomber runway) straight.
What other pictures are there of close finishes, or what other really close finishes come to mind? |

I agree with the '71 Italian GP at Monza, 5 cars crossed the line separated by only 0.61 seconds.
My particular favourite however is the 1986 Spanish GP at Jerez. Mansell came out of the pits on fresh tyres 20 seconds behind Senna with 9 laps to go. By the start of the last lap he was 1.5 seconds behind. It was a straight drag race out of the last corner, Senna's winning margin 0.014s. Phew! |

Old Nige certainly did storm on in that one, 3-series, but have we got any photos? That's what I was hoping to find...

Hey, Ray Bell. Would you like to see a video MPG of the Jerez '86 finish?
You can find it at http://www.FarzadsF1Gallery.com/movies.html There are a lot of other very interesting F1 videos. |

Ray,
Pictures, I don't know of any on the net but I guess there must be some. If you have access to a copy of 'The Concise Encyclopedia of F1' by Tremayne & Hughes (mine cost a fiver in the local supermarket of all places!) there is a chapter on close finishes including a pic of the 5 car Monza finish. Sadly it only has Mansell trying to climb up Senna's exhaust in the last corner, not crossing the line. |

Thanks Santi... to be honest, I don't recall this race, but I must have seen it. I'll have a go at downloading that mpg some time...
Great finishes, love them! |

Sandown feb 1968...Jim Clark and Chris Amon diced inches apart for about 50 laps in VERY HOT conditions.Jim Clark won and got out of his car as if he could dot it again.Poor Chris had to be helped out of his car.He was totaly worn out..No Photos unfortunatly.

Shame on you, Mick... you must have chucked out your collection of Racing Car News!
There's a photo in their report, small, but clear... here it is.. unfortunately in my bound set, so the gutter mucks it up, but it surely shows it was a close finish. My memories of that day are from the other end of the circuit... but still of a great race. |
