An impressive feat it must be said. He hasn't hit double figures in races started and yet he's up there in the high end of the podium streaks!

I feel it will end soon though, with Alonso getting better luck and Kimi waking up. There has to be a day where the Ferrari's and Fernando outgun him....surely?

This list shows how predictable the current results are - so many long streaks of podiums in recent years. It's impressive from Lewis, but probably more to do with McLaren being so well prepared for every circuit and every eventuality.

Didn't Mansell get 9 straight wins over two seasons? Or was 9 wins in a season?

No doubt a great feat but he should be doing this, there are 4 cars for 3 positions. He has had a great car and should have been on the podium, and he as. It wont last forever but good on him

Jim Clark's presence on the list is a little surprising. My impression of his career is that he had the faster but less reliable car of the time - he only ever took one 2nd place finish in a race.

Although I dislike stats, those make quite impressive reading it has to be said.

Barring mechanical problems, Lewis could be no 2 on this list by end of season!

He's also going to have far and away the best wins v starts ratio ever in F1 I would've thought?

Not at his current rate, no. He has 9 starts and 2 wins, giving him a little less than 25%. Fangio is at 47.96%, Ascari 40.625%, MSC 36.694% and Clark 34.722%. There are two statistical mishaps in the top 5 of the winning ratio, one being Lee Wallard with two GP and one win and the other Bill Vukovich with five GP and two wins.

So Lewis will have to win quite a few more races to be up there.

Top effort for sure, but to me it really just shows how depressingly reliable cars have become in the last few years.
Because he drove a Lotus Clarke's should count double!

I think Mansell had 6 Wins in a row, but that is off the top of my head

if it was strictly just a measure of reliability, then we should except to see more teammates on the list, particularly in LH's case where he shares a car with a reigning 2 time WDC.
the fact that he partners with FA makes this streak all the more impressive for me.

1 car in the 50's, 1 in the 60's 1 in the 70's, 7 in the 80's (5 of which were McLaren, with the 2 best drivers of the decade) 4 in the 90's and already 6 in the 00's
Without doubt there is a luck factor as well, the other factor is the reletive gap that is developing between the best teams and the mid field. Previously it seemed that on a specific day at a specific curcuit the pool of placegetters was half the field, over the last couple of years it seems 2 maybe 3 teams are your best bet with the odd interloper

While it may seem that only 2 or 3 teams can get a podium, do keep in mind that we nowadays have very close fields timewise. The gap between P1 and P16 in the 2nd qualifying at Silverstone was 1.8s. 10 years ago, it was 2.6s, 20 years 5.2s! The field nowadays is much more competitive than it was in the 80s.

Interesting point.

In the fifties there were less races (9?)

In the sixties the transition from 1.5 litres to 3 litres lead to reliability issues and there were less races.

In the eighties there was a period when cars were turbocharged or normally aspirated. The Turbos became more reliable after 1984, but the transition period was a long one. The drivers with the longest streaks were the best of their time. Ruetemann had the Williams Cosworth under him which represented the most reliable car on the grid.

The nineties was a period of stability with limited manufacturers hence engine longevity was improved.

locco has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
but nowadays they're traveling with faster speeds, meaning times between cars is smaller but the distance is the same. thats of course during race time not quali.

It's down to 2 things.

1 - Reliability.
2 - Longer seasons.

There's no question Fangio had the speed to podium in probably every race from the start of 1954 to the end of 1957.

Even so, that was barely 25 races for all 4 seasons. In addition, there's no way a car would have finished every race back then.

Agree entirely Dudley, to get 9 consecutive podia (Ensign!) in the early years would have meant almost the entire season rather than "just" the second half once all the bugs have been sorted out from the car.
