Yes, State of Origin numbers attendances were down in 2017 compared to 2016, by about 8000. And 2016 was down by about 31,000 when compared to 2015, so yes, on those numbers, the game surely must be losing popularity!

But look closer:
This year, 2 games were at the smaller capacity Suncorp Stadium, with 1 at ANZ.
In 2016, 2 games were at the larger capacity ANZ Stadium, with 1 at Suncorp.
The capacity of ANZ is listed as 83500, Suncorp 52500. So with 31,000 less seats to sell, of course numbers were going to be down!!!
And in 2015. there was 1 game at Suncorp, 1 at ANZ, and 1 at the MCG, with the biggest crowd of all 3 years at over 91,000 people.
Next year, the game comes back to Melbourne again; let's see what that does to the numbers!

As for the motorsport popularity test - I like to consider what proportion of a diverse group of people not connected to or by sport are interested in or can old an informed conversation about motorsport, cricket, AFL (I live in Melbourne), or tennis? In any workplace or schooling environment I have spent time at, motorsport has been the least popular of the 4. Yes, it is my favourite - but I/we are in the minority. If we weren't, the daily print media would be giving it a lot more attention. How many pages of print do AFL/NRL/cricket/tennis grand slams get compared to motorsport??? Tons!
There would be a reason for downsizing in arena, why go smaller when no other state gives to stuff's, I have seen people on facebook from WA, SA and NT go off the rocker over origin spreading outside our states (NSW, QLD) and not just a few, more then I care to read. Costs money to have a big stadium that probably wont fill

Ok. I'll take you seriously when you pay attention. The reason for 2 events in the smaller stadium is that it was QLD turn to host 2 events. When NSW hosts 2 events then there is more opportunity to fit more people in.

Calm down. Speak about what you know...not what you think you know.

So why did they go to WA a few years back. Also, don't tell me to pay attention, I have read what Peckstar posted about the TV ratings dropping, showing that it is losing ratings. You want to put it down to ONE event, Bathurst made 3.1 million viewers last year in Australia, in Australia for the origin this year they hit 2.448 average with a peak of 3.6 million in the last game. So from an average point of view Bathurst is higher. 2017 isn't over yet, and our ratings only go off who tunes in to a show in Australia. After last years 1000 it will be close to a record breaker again.

As for costs of a venue, in any sport, whether it be V8s, Football, Cricket, Tennis, I suggest you research and have a look at some costs. At a bare minimum for club league sports we look at about $10,000 to hire a location for a season (in cricket at least, I play but the organisers don't hold back the cost 'secret') I would accept it if you even asked your local clubs as that is what I consider some research, ask your local raceway how much they pay to operate it, I don't know the exact operation number for my local track as I don't get involved in that, couldn't care less about managing cost myself as it isn't my area, but it needs to be looked at by someone. I would imagine it isn't cheap, after all, most tracks are paying around about $1 million to keep up to CAMs specification according to speedcafe. Its all fine and good to sit there and say this beats this, but when you look into it further, costs, all those things are a contributing factor.

My experience in years 9 and 10, 13 and 14, I went to the Football for a trip. In both years, numbers weren't that spectacular at Suncorp stadium, it was a regular game but close to the end of the season, and there was no more, probably less then you'd see at Clipsal or Townsville V8s.

anyway Pirtek Enduro cup starts this week.

We can discuss SOG in some other thread

Betting is in for Sandown. JW is the fav, then SVG & SML

I know there are a lot of Stanaway fans here, so he is at $51 (or $9 for a place) (and $19 for top Ford)

If Jamie doesn't balls Bathurst he and Lowndes will be a threat for the cup, Mostert, McLaughlin and Coulthard, however I think that will be for minors.

I don't think that Richie and Cam though will be there, not this year at least, nor will Bright and Jacobson. Hopefully PRA focus on Frosty and Chaz who are in contention for a top 5. Too many strong combinations though, my opinion on strong combinations is:

Whincup/Dumbrell
SVG/Campbell
Winterbottom/Canto
McLaughlin/Premat
Coulthard/D'Alberto
Mostert/Owen
Lowndes/Richards
Reynolds/Youlden (Dark horse for me)
Davison/Webb

9 possible and very likely cars there I'd dare say. Very competitive ENDURO season coming up

Anyway, given we are headed into the ENDURO season, I thought I would just leave this here for all you Holden and Triple 8 fans, while I have a lot of respect for Jamie, I cant help but find this funny https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y87Rd9oEb20

Yes indeed, both did their part in screw ups. Looking back now, I can see how Jamie thought the move was on, just a shame he lost it, would have been a good finish

My honest hopes for this years Bathurst podium is Lowndes, Frosty and Chaz. Lowndesy deserves a few more as does Frosty, and Chaz reminds me of Craig around the mountain

Then there was this one. I still remember that, was on my way home that afternoon when I got the message that Chaz was in the fence and hurt, first thing I wondered was what the hell did he do, then saw the replay, very lucky boy and a credit to the cars

And yet the largest ever State of Origin crowd in history is 91,000 people at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Victoria.

Sounds like maybe other states do give two stuffs

Yes ok

Tell that to all the media and TV bosses who give mountains more airtime & page space to Origin or a normal weekly round of the AFL or NRL than Bathurst gets for one event a year, and tell them that not as many people as they think are into football.

Very lucky, the other thing was the marshalls, I saw them get thrown and knew that wasn't goo either. But, as all of us know, that's racing, we push our cars and we will crash, thankfully hasn't happened with the group I am in. I don't know about other racers, but its something that you try not to think about, obviously it is a possibility, but I find if you don't have time to think, about that, you push the car and with all the elements, heat, tyres, dust, rain, whatever it be, your always busy

Going into the final round, the top 7 in the Cup have scored 3 out of the votes (Coulthard with 2, Chaz 1)

Guess most of us are not great tippers

First time since 2009 (I think?) That 888 have gone winless in any of the 2 driver endurance races.
