Well, let's see how a front-engined GT1 can cope with a mid-rear engined Supercar at the FIA-GT.....

It´s the same as the one on the 550. You can measure downforce by comparing wheel speed and airspeed. If airspeed is higher than groundspeed you got downforce at the place the pitot measures. other way aroundyou have lift.
I thought air moving more slowly over a surface gives it downforce? Kind of how the curved surface on top of a plane wing maks the air on the top side move faster than the air under the wing, which lowers pressire on the top side to create lift. Anyway, I'm not too sharp on this. Could you educate me?

Why the DBR9 is numbered 59 on its doors ??

Something linked with Aston history ?

I think it's to do with the year it last won the championship or something.

Aston Martin won Le Mans, the Nurburgring 1000K and the World Sports Car championship in 1959. I guess that's the reason.

Sorry my mistake.

If airspeed is higher than groundspeed you got lift at the place the pitot measures. other way aroundyou have downforce.

And the TT at Goodwood. Moss' car (leading) caught fire in the pits, so they transferred him to the #2 car in which he came through and passed the leaders (Porsche and Ferrari) to win, taking the title in the process.

So yes, Le Mans and the Championship in 1959, pretty significant for Astons.

I'm glad they're going to build a decent number of them. Due to money problems, they only ever entered a handful of cars (sometimes solo entries) in the '60s and were usually overwhelmed by the hordes of Ferraris.

That Pitot tube is very high up its not for measuring downforce its just for more accurate speed measurement. For downforce they will have little pressure sensors all over the car, sometimes up to 150 of them. This will then be used in CFD software to check the accuracy.

Yes but those static ports(pressure sensors) are used together with the pitot tube.

So how did you get that close to the car? Usually, when manufacturers test their racecars, it's kept top secret. If they saw you, didn't they try to hide the car further, bribe you or take your camera??

Thats the good thing about UK general test sessions, you just turn up and stroll around, no secrecy whatsoever.

Being at Snett, I can only imagine what the Saloon drivers must have thought to see that coming up behind them at susch speed!!

Remember when we were tesitng there a couple of month ago with a Lupo cup car, Anthony Reid out at the same time in his MG, our man couldn't believe the speed diffrence, and only once managed to almost take him off!
