TerryC should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Minimap on Steering Wheel

Do these minimaps of the circuit serve any real, practical purpose at all?

Perhaps to help a driver unfamiliar with the circuit to be able to correctly identify where he has broken down?

As far as I know it's used to rule out any misunderstandings in the pit-to-car-communication, to make sure corner 4 is the same corner for both the driver and the engineer.

That helps when the right map is on the whell.

I've been at Silverstone and seen Spa on the wheel! Just as well there is no co-driver...be a bit rough as you climb Eau Rouge

They are there to help the driver when he talks to his engineer when they are making a setup change halfway through a session etc. It makes sure they are both talking about the same corner!! I think if the driver needs to look at it as gttouring suggests he ought not to be in the car!!

It's for the driver to give the engineer a turn number and not "The fast right hander after the hairpin."

It's for the mechanics, so they can be sure to fit the correct steering wheel for each circuit. This is especially important when going from Spa (which is a clockwise track) to Interlagos (anti-clockwise). Then they have a specially made steering wheel for Suzuka.

That's why you often see drivers throwing away the steering wheel after an accident - obviously the wrong wheel was fitted causing the driver to crash. He's throwing it away to make sure it isn't fitted incorrectly again.

You meant wheels would be configured differently according to circuit? I thought wheel was just a wheel. Interesting point though and for those who mentioned the wrong wheel fitted above...
