Amaroo Park should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Having recently read a book about the Walkinshaw cars and how much they ummm bent the rules I can now see that as one of the reasons that the Willmington Jag was not as quick as the Scottish cars

He then went on to campaign a privateer Supra turbo after the Jag so he liked to have something different, technically challenging and unreliable.

The Better Brakes 300 at Amaroo Park had 24 starters (according to the video highlights someone has uploaded to YouTube). From the looks of things the Craft and Grose Capri's were in the race, and there was also a Mustang which looked like Ken Davison's. I can't identify the car that started 23rd, but it looks like a Corolla.

One of the Capri's qualified 20th, the other 22nd. The Mustang looked like it started 24th and last.

Also, Jim Richards' JPS BMW still carried #62 in the race.

Also, from what I have heard (not to do with the Amaroo 300).....Dick Johnson toyed with the idea of actually entering a full compliment of 4 drivers for the James Hardie 1000 with Michele Delcourt and none other than the then out-of-a-drive Allan Moffat in the #18 Mustang, but apparently Larry Perkins vetoed it believing that DJR didn't have the resources to successfully race both cars. Not sure if this came about before Bathurst or during practice when the Graham Moore Starion was withdrawn leaving the Belgian without a drive. I know a lot of the Moffat speculation came after he drove the #18 Mustang for Channel 7.

Owned by Mark Petch of New Zealand, the Australian foray was based in Sydney, NSW with fellow Kiwi Robbie Francevic the driver. This car was one of two 1984 Guy Trigaux Motorsport cars bought and tranported to New Zealand for the innaugural Wellington 500 in New Zealand. The team made their ATCC debut at round 2 at Sandown and winning in only their second attempt, at Symmons Plains. Being close to their Australian base the two isolated AMSCAR races were also taken in before the major endurance races at Sandown and Bathurst. Initially Petch was supposed to be driving partner for Sandown, but realising he was out of touch Francevic was giving a free choice of codriver. He selected Tasmanian single seater driver John Bowe, who at the time was considered a bit of a crasher. With a disapointing Bathurst the team ended their Australian tour.
It's interesting to note that the team apparently had some connections with the Volvo headquater in Sweden and their European activities. Parts were supplied from both here and 1985 team of choice Eggenberger Motorsport in Switzerland, but the gun engine for Bathurst was from the privately run Swedish Magnum Racing, which might explain why Ulf Granberg was considered for that particular race.

Jesper
Hi Jesper,

FYI, Its simply not true that Robbie selected John Bowe, as JB would readily confirm, I met John through Graeme "Watty" Watson, and was most impressed with his speed in the "Lucky Nuts" formula Mondial car, and after a storming driver at Amaroo I asked him if he would be interested in driving a touring car, the rest is history really save to say that I arranged for JB to come to a test day at Oran Park and he was immediately very fast, so that's when I offered him the drive at Sandown and Bathurst.

Also I was only ever interested in driving at Bathurst and after a few exploratory laps on the first day of practice I made the decision not to drive because I felt i would compromise our ability to win the race pretty simple really.

Cheers,

Mark.

1985 Supra Rebuild

Hi, long time since I read this thread as well. Jesper, Willo's Supra wasn't a new shell for 1985; the original shell was repaired. I have photos of it being stripped to a bare shell, then paint stripped, repaired and reassembled. There was a bit of 'posturing' going on at the time I think; one publication says that the car was a brand new one developed by TRD and flown out here but that is certainly not the case either.

Also I see my old ex Ken Harrison Escort was mentioned again. It was definitely a Mk 2 Mexico 1600 in Group A guise in 1985; this homologation is listed in the logbook along with the 1600 Pinto capacity. In fact this car rarely ever raced as a 2L despite being a race car since 1979 in Australian Group C, Ken tried the 2L Pinto, 1600 Kent and 1600 Pinto engines in the car at various times searching for class wins depending on the race meeting.

I seem to recall in an AMC article that Garry Willmington said that before the 1985 James Hardie, he tried to buy a set of the Denloc Dunlops from TWR to run on his Jaguar at Bathurst (TWR was the official Dunlop racing distributor in the UK at the time), but Tom refused to sell him any.

Not really sure why he wouldn't sell him any. Its not like the #12 XJS was ever going to be a threat to Tom's cars. Even if the TWR Jags were legal, they still would have been light years ahead of Willmington and Janson in outright speed.

IIRC, the Jag was the fastest car in a straight line during the ATCC round at Adelaide in 1985. The long AIR straight allowed Willmington to open the V12 up a bit. He also had the Jag up fairly high on the grid at the GP support race that year in Adelaide where he was again the fastest on the long straight. If only he had a decent budget to develop the car, it might have given the local 635's, Volvo's, Commodore's and Mustangs a fright, at least in 1985.
