Hmm.

Truck, v6 tranny and Escort can all in one shot (but small though.)

Larger picture of the truck.

I have a colour shot of the truck from the Silverstone Classic 2005 somewhere. I'll find it and add it.

Ah, here we go.

Yep, but not an exciting one. Iirc it was a basic 1.3 in mostly undercoat grey having originally been that silver metallic colour that went matt and peeled off after a year or so.

I had a Mk1 Escort GT at the time in the blue tinted version of the metallic paint and that had done the same. To think that people pay money for a matt finish now ... back then Ford gave it away!

I guess that means the Ford almost invented wrapping! (Or unwrapping.)

VW camper in shot as well.

Plus the timber truck axle unit that probably gave Derek Gardner the idea for P34 ...

I was thinking there were quite a few worrying things about that shot, the 2 wheel trailer being the second of them. The third is that I don't recall the SWB Trannies to be very weighty nor that good for towing. I seem to remember trying to to use one to tow a Renault 5 from Cambridge to Croft and gave up after about 5 miles abandoning the tranny and trailer in a hotel car park and driving up in the R5. At anything over about 30 mph the whole thing tried to wobble off the road.

I can't imagine what it would have been like with an E-type on the back. Note how much lift there is on the front axle in the photo. Must've been a publicity shot to get some exposure - which it certainly did by the looks of it!

So what's the story?

Ah, cheers Al. I had remembered Silver Fox but the other colour (Mine, doh!) had slipped my mind as I wrote.

To be fair to Ford I bought mine at about 4 years old and sold it on 2 years later. I saw the thing about 6 years after that still running round, still looking much the same, still with the concave rear springs ...

I like to think it still had my rebuilt engine in it but who knows. When I was building it I got all the major moving parts balanced at Laystall in London. I think it was almost for free having got to know the guy who did much of their balancing work over the previous year or so with a constant stream of brake discs for him to work his magic on.

Happy days.

It would have had to have been! I had a light gold one that also suffered from the fade effect and oddly enough had a bang right outside where I now own my shop but many many years ago, I got a complete respray out of it. I always remember the car it was 1300 and I thought it handled beautifully although no guts but it took me and the family all the way to the South of France and back.

Back in the early late 60s and early 70s I used to tow my race car on a two wheel trailer behind a twin cam Anglia van. I used to do meetings all over the place including abroad. Loaded up with spares and 5 up it had so much weight in it that fishtailing never happened with the trailer

Hi there, yup we're hoping to get it finished in the not-too-distant. It'd be neat to re-unite it with the old car again one day, although nothing's arranged or in place as yet, but something at a future Revival meeting would be appropriate, given that RD Poore Motor Racing were based just down the road from Goodwood after the war. The Dodge was at the first meeting in 1948 too. When did you visit the workshops?

They also did a light green in that problem metallic acrylic paint. The funny thing was that the grey undercoat was normally OK.

Hi there, I went down there few weeks ago to talk to Doug about preparing my car for next season.

I assume the Dodge is yours? They are really proud about doing the work at CCR aren't they, and rightly so. It's a lovely job to take on. They were talking about the work they'd done with the paint guys. Facinating.

Have you spoken to the owner of Dennis Poore's Alfa?

Firstly I again failed to post the pic; The history of WOO 11 is fairly well documented, from RAC, Alpine and Tulip rallies to 1969 29 starts 25 1st places as per Spike, my part.... Trannies V4's V6's P108 Perkins etc & Geoff Uren converstions, plus an XK 3-8ltr shoehorned in never has been. The journies & adventures across Europe in the company of a Ford Transit from Mk1 to the present Mk5, proverbial book filler. The van in the pic was part of the fleet opperated by JQ's company delivering the company's electrical products, weekends hauling the E & trailer. When the van was loaded not too bad!? 35mph ish a fair old fishtailing trailer, but we never did dyke it, close now n' then! Van was 1966 'D' reg V4 13/15 mpg towing, and G.. knows how many push rods & push rod guides and two new engines replaced over it's life of four years, 3 clutches and two of those by the side of the road. Pic was taken after a photo session, the E being the subject of a magazine article outside John's then home in Dulwich. Why? just a good idea at the time.

It was the undercoat that caused the problem, just not suited to the application. We used to respray dozens of those cars so blessed, but the undercoat was well keyed before hand.

Dear Old Jack le Forte never bothered with tow trucks/trailers and the like drive the Ferrari to Brands Lyden G/Wood etc race/sprint it drive it home, even if it meant changing 24 plugs at each set of lights, another of those never to be replaced characters.
