Ray Mallock Ldt is set to run a team with MG-badged Rover 45s in next years British Touring Car Championship. The contract is only part-season since the new MG 45 will be launched in the middle of the year. The deal is still uncomfirmed from both parts, but rumours has been spread for a while and insiders say that official announcement is coming shortly.

I hope this is true, as the series desperately needs more manufacturer support. Remember, that at this time Rover will be only the third works team.

If it is true, and the rumour does seem very strong. then they still won't be in the series until halfway through the season, which is a shame.

Stop doing the BTCC down, Mr!

Aussie V8s have two manufacturers.
DTM has two plus a privateer Audi team.

Neither of them are doing too bad, are they ?

I know that there are many of each of these cars, but the BTCC already has Vauxhall and Peugeot confirmed, with Rover keen, and privateer Alfas, BMW and Lexus rumoured. All this for what is effectively a brand new series ? Not as desperate as it sounds, is it ?

I for one can't wait til the first meeting of next year to see where we are at. I have high hopes

At this stage, yes, things don't look too rosy, but all it will seriously take is one more committed manufacturer to venture into the realm of Class A (sorry, BTC Touring) and you have a whole new series.

Vauxhall still are pledging to build six cars; Peugeot another four or six. It's not all gloom and doom, especially if some of those extra teams come into the BTCC...

According to the latest Autosport news I read today, Vauxhall has reduced the number of cars to be built down from 6 to 4.

It seems Opel/MB are quite confident about finding buyers for their '00 spec cars. They mentioned the '01 spec cars are only marginally better. But races are won by just margins these days?? ;-)

According to MB, they will only lease the cars. Don't know about Opel's plans.

Just for the benefit of those of you that hadn't seen the press release/pictures yet Rover have now made a picture of the MG 'X10' prototype available:

The above is of course the badge engineered 75, but if this is anything like how the 45 will look I really can't wait for the 2001 BTCC It's a bit too 'Max Power' perhaps, but just imagine the touring car version. Still no official confirmation on this though...

What I mean is, who in their right mind is going to get excited over a second rate, middle aged, hatchback with about as much appeal as a Peruda Nippa !!

before you all start I'am not anti Rover/MG having owned & run their vehicles inthe past. This just appears to be in desperate publicity stunt.

Sorry

As second-rate and middle-aged as a Mondeo perhaps? Or how about a Vectra?

I actually think the MG/Rover is more up to date and possibly more appealing than the roadgoing Mondeos/Vectras.

In race trim? Well the pictures look good so far. We'll have to wait and see

It's all about image - they are considering entering the BTCC to try and lose their image of picket lines, AA vans and talking Maestros (sorry Maisie!) in the same way as Volvo managed to change their image with their entry and some rather impressive new models.
