D'ya want the cynical suggestion? perhaps, in the event of a negligence claim against them, the operating of a registration and grading scheme allows a governing body to show that they take due care in ensuring that all marshals are trained and competent...

Now I'm sure that's not the reason the the MSA do this...

I believe that from this year ACU licences will all carry the single grade of 'road race marshal' to avoid problems with proving an individual's competence in specific areas.

Who does send out this 'green badge'? My license arrived 3 or 4 weeks ago, but I haven't received a green badge or an upgrade card yet.

The club you do most of your marshalling for should provide the green badge Phill.

If you're a BMMC member it comes from Bob Rae, the national grading officer. When your upgrade is approved you will get a letter from Bob confirming your new grade, along with the badge. If you haven't had the letter, your upgrade is probably still working its way through the system.

If you are a member of another club, their grading officer will deal with it - not all clubs issue badges. The club responsible for your grading is the first club listed on your MSA licence.

It is possible that, even as a BMMC member, you may not be issued with a green badge. It was mooted last year that the new photo membership car, which shows your grade on a strip of the appropriate colour, would replace metal badges; I'm not sure of the current position on this.

Stephen! Would it be possible to have a sticky explaining the various cards and grading scheme so that when the question next rears its ugly head forum members can be referred to that thread?

In the meantime these are the cards you should have and where they come from if you are a BMMC member:

MSA licence: from MSA used for attendance signatures only once grade has been achieved and as entrance to some circuits. Not issued to Trainees - it is white with green markings and requires a picture - and can be signed by either an Observer or Senior Specialist. Blank cards are issued to Trainees if required as entrance card.

Upgrade cards: issued by Bob Rae (National Grading Officer)
can only be signed by X grades for satisfactory completion of duty.

BMMC membership card: being issued in place of grade badges and issued by either National Grading Secretary or Regional Membership Secretary (for this year). New card will be issued on either upgrade or addition of grade and date slips will be sent out annually as confirmation of membership renewal.

Hope this helps.

Losing my patience now!
I have called the MSA five times now to find out why I don't have a licence. Each time they say one will be posted. They check their computer and say "Oh, it's not been sent, we'll get one out tonight" Perhaps the offices of our governing body should be relocated to Florida - the home of other Mickey Mouse organisations!

It took mine just over a week to arrive after letting the MSA know the original was one of those 'lost'. I hope that helps with the timing a little?
