He was certainly a hero of mine. In 1963 I failed my English GCE, (wrote a crap essay on 'The haunted house'! I then went to my first GP at Silverstone (which Jim Clark won) and did my 'O' level retake in November. One of the essay titles was 'My great sporting hero', so I always attribute my English 'O' level success to the great, much lamented Jimmy Clark! RIP.

Top of the list of sportsmen I would have loved to see live. I was 6 weeks old when he died.

I saw Jim and the rest of them at Sandown in Melbourne in the '60s for the Trans Tasman series........practice days and Sunday race day.......wonderful open wheeler racing back then.
I was totally gobsmacked when I heard Jim had passed away in Germany........very sad day. |

Jim Clark
I remember seeing Jim Clark win the 1967 G.P. at Silverstone, by just over 12 seconds from Denny Hulme and Chris Amon.
I still have the programme, and I think he then drove a Lotus Cortina in the supporting saloon race. I can still remember where I was, and what I was doing when I heard the news that day, 45 years ago. |
