F1 heads back to Austria - 2014

You wonder why it's taken so long considering Red Bull's involvement.

p-matt should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Great news - always liked Spielberg as a circuit. Shame they couldn't have agreed terms for a 2013 race.

Not sure how they're going to fit Austria, New Jersey and Sochi into next year's calendar. Either they have more than 20 races or Korea, India or even Suzuka might be in danger

It gives Bernie more leverage with some of those other venues but it great to see another European GP after loosing so many in recent years with others still at risk.

now, by logic the obscure country bashing brigade should be all over this one, considering there is very little motorsport culture in austria, relatively few events held at the circuit and even free motorsport events like the wsr + elms one at the weekend didn't draw a huge crowd. by contrast the free air show there recently was apparently absolutely mobbed.

it's a really good circuit, though the immediate paddock area is a little small. local accomodation is an issue, though there's plenty of b&b and dodgy ski chalet style things on offer within an hour of the circuit. graz is the nearest big town and it's definitely a sedate place. to all intents and purposes, it's magny cours in the mountains. but i don't doubt that people will be all over it like a rash and desperate to sing its praises purely because it's the red bull ring and not bleak, flat, windy central france.

on a frivelous note, almost without exception the female circuit staff are all stunning

If Austria is on 6th July next year what of the New Jersey GP as there does not appear to be a date to twin it with Canada remembering that a GP cannot clash with Le Mans?

Next year it is due to be in Hochenheim but I am not sure how long its contract is. It is to alternate with the Nurburgring but 2015 is anybody's guess.

The old circuit was stunning. Its almost a travesty what happened to the old Osterriechring - probably one of the best circuits in the world. It is a nice setting though and it generally produces good racing.

oh, the current circuit still isn't bad at all, like i said in the elms thread most of the drivers giggle like little girls when they talk about it. but it's not great for overtaking, and they're REALLY going to have to do something about all the 4 wheels off penalties and the warning flags.

but it's like motorland in that it's neat and tidy and well cared for, and unlike the moscow and portimaos of the world it has been rebuilt properly, carefully and with some outrageously good spectator viewing points.

According to this Autosport article, Dietrich Mateschitz, had talks about having the race replace New Jersey this year.

I agree, it is a travesty, the old circuit was awesome, with those sweeping curves.

I caught some of the World Series by Renault race at the RB Ring, this last weekend and I barely recognised it.

it's a magnificent track, but they built it out of jacob's cream crackers - the track has subsided, and the buildings are looking ropey already. apparently it's uberbumpy in a single seater nowadays.

to be fair to the red bull ring, the camera points are pretty bad in all wsr races at all circuits and it's better than it looks on tv. much like the hungaroring really i suppose.

it *is* a shame it's not like the old track, but things change. it would have been castrated by the safety crusade by now anyway.

That is fine but there will only be one week between New Jersey and Austria. This meaning that shipping everything will have to go like clockwork with only 3 days to get everything to the RB ring.
Normally the cars and equipment is moved by truck in Europe coming from the teams bases, but in this case will have to go by air causing difficulties for the return journies to the team bases.

It would not surprise me if New Jersey does not happen based on the date for Austria.

I don't wish to dwell on this too much Bella, but Watkins Glen is actually quite similar to the Old Osterrieichring in the sense that it has some really high speed corners with nothing but barriers or grass to run off onto, yet that still hosts major events, its not like that track has been destroyed by the safety brigade like Zeltweg - (its easier to spell!) was.

Yes, but Watkins Glen is a Grade 2 track (meaning F1 can't race or even test at it)

A1 ring is a Grade 1 track (meaning it is safe enough for F1 to race there).

But yes, I would have rather seen them use the old Osterrieichring (with increased runoff) for everything but F1 if it would have preserved the old track.

very fair point. the only thing i'd say is that there's two different safety brigades in operation. i think they're more prone to pitchforks and burning torches in europe compared to the states and so watkins glen escaped the bulldozers. the prime example is spa - it's totally stripped back and ruined now even compared to how it was 15 years ago. perhaps the counterpoint is monza, but i think that place is a very special case. road circuits aren't quite beaten with the same stick outside of europe.

I went in 2001 and enjoyed the GP. The coach parked on the old circuit too.

Wonderful setting, enjoyed the race. As bella said, local accommodation is limit and I had to stay a million miles away. Nice country too, a great place to visit.

as in not happen at all?

call me a cynic but i have never had much faith that the NJ race was ever going to happen in the first place and sort of suspect that it is all an elaborate ploy to increase property values in the area.

thats just speculation but i do know that not having a back to back with monty makes the CanadianGP a much stronger event which as a Canadian am all in favour of.

like the news about and suggested date for Austria.

if anyone was going to go i would have to recommend graz purely for the drive to and from the circuit. takes about 90 mins if you take the mountain route via koflach and salla rather than the 10km tunnel they want €8.50 off you to use and it's absolutely brilliant fun. there's some really magnificent scenery too. heading down into the valley is pretty spectacular

Yes, I also prefer the Osterreichring to the A1-Ring/Red Bull Ring.

(The Safety Brigade ought to just shut up, or quit approving any street circuits for F1, period.)
