Clio Cup is dead - long live Clio Cup

https://www.renaultsport.co.uk/press...onship-events/

Unexpected news this morning, not particularly clear whether it’s for the new cars alone or if it’s part of the existing Clio Cup Series with the previous generations though.

Either way, good to see it’s not completely dead.

I am glad too it's being kept alive in some capacity. Now just need to get the numbers back up to a reasonable level again

1.3l 180bhp? Sounds like a step down. More for the clubman driver.

The slight reduction in power is a step down I suppose but it’s still a factory built race car, they’re outside the price range of most club racers I’ve ever met.

180bhp seems way to low to me. I'm assuming they're well over a tonne in weight so the performance for the amount of money they will cost is well out of whack IMO.

These types of cars rarely produce dull racing, so I'm not concerned about the power output.

Good to see that the series will have proper coverage being on the BGT bill, unlike the half-arsed effort that the MINIs are going to be confined to next year.

The people paying a considerable amount of money to drive them might be concerned about it though. Not to mention that the lower powered the car the tighter the grid is which usually equals more expensive through damage.

I am also quite shocked at the drop in power.

Puts them pretty much on par with BRSCC Fiesta STs which run around 160hp and are much much cheaper to run than a brand new clio.

I would still be expecting 60-70k for a full season arrive and drive with these new Clios, thats hardly 'clubman' budget

And surely after being publicly canned, many drivers / teams that would've been interested are now working on programs elsewhere... could be another small grid, especially with the MINIs now being on the BTCC package and with multiple classes & costs avaliable.

Appears as though the new car is closer to a standard Clio rather than based on the full fat R.S. version. Seems a strange choice unless they're not doing a new Clio R.S.?
