Pukekohe Park is delighted to once again be the home of the V8’s for 2006 and 2007. “It will be great to have the roar of the V8’s back here at Pukekohe,” said Greg Mitchell the General Manager of Counties Racing Club. “The 2005 event was one of the best ever staged at Pukekohe and we are more than happy to work with Capital Sports Management to host the V8 Supercars here for the next two years.” “We have found that there was very little interference with the day to day running of the thoroughbred training centre this year and now with our new all weather sand training track with its full lighting we will have no problem working the horses trained here before the motor racing activities start.” “The income from the V8 Super cars will contribute significantly towards the continuing development of our training centre. With the new sand track completed, plans are nearly finalised for 100 additional horse tie-up stalls, together with preliminary design work for 20 to 40 horse stable blocks, should there be a demand from trainers wishing to be resident at the complex. Currently the majority of horses trained at the complex are trucked in on a daily basis and past results clearly indicate that this situation works well with the motor sport activities. “All interested parties have been well briefed on the V8’s returning and there has been unanimous support for their continued appearance at Pukekohe Park. “We are looking forward to working with Capital Sports Management and making the 2006 and 2007 events even more spectacular.” Item Supplied by: Sports Media NZ/Ian Hepenstall The views/images expressed in this article/image are not necessarily those of Pacific Motorsport Ltd. http://www.nzmotorsport.co.nz/conten...?pLive&id=5399 So it seems that the Supercars being at Pukekohe will not benefit Motorsport as much as some would have you believe. The profits are going straight to the Horse complex. Hmmm |

Bigger and faster Taupo will bid for MotoGP
24 July 2005 By BERNARD CARPINTER Motorbike superstar Valentino Rossi could be racing in New Zealand within a few years, now the $13 million makeover of the Taupo circuit is all go. The MIT Development company has secured the funding for the redevelopment that will make Taupo the top track in New Zealand, and it wants to host a New Zealand Grand Prix as part of the MotoGP world championship. Motorcycling New Zealand president David Appleton said he was "absolutely rapt" to hear MIT was going ahead with the ambitious project. He would immediately inform the FIM, the world body for motorcycle sport. "They need to know it's up and running," he said. "I'm pretty confident it'll get a good reaction. "The FIM wants MotoGP to be a true world championship and I think if it's to be a genuine world championship it needs to run in more places around the world." MotoGP is based mainly in Europe, where it attracts crowds of up to 130,000. Its popularity has soared since the introduction of the big four-strokes for the top class, and the rise of the charismatic and extremely fast Rossi. The Italian, only 26, has won the top title for the past four years and earlier won in the 125cc and 250cc classes. He is running away with this year's series even though his Yamaha is not as fast as the Hondas. There has been talk that Rossi - who has won fans through his practical jokes as well as his speed - would move to Formula One or rallying, but he said recently that he intended to keep racing motorbikes. Appleton is going to an FIM meeting in October and said he would push New Zealand's case there. A promoter would also need to do a deal with Spanish company Dorna, which holds the commercial rights. The project will see the little 1.4km Centennial Park club circuit expanded to 3.5km. Pit garages, corporate hospitality, media centre and spectator amenities will be the best in New Zealand. Former world superbike star Aaron Slight helped fine-tune the design of the new circuit to make it suitable for top-level racing. The track could also be considered for New Zealand's round of the V8 Supercars from 2008. MIT Development has appointed a new board, chaired by John Parker of Wanganui. He is a former deputy chief executive of the Dairy Board and currently chairman of Ruapehu Alpine Lifts, Port of Tauranga and Northport. "Construction can begin virtually immediately," Parker said. "All the contracts are there waiting to be signed, with fixed prices. "The track and safety work will be finished by February, although the whole development might not be completed by then." There was "intense interest" in the idea of staging big international events like MotoGP at the track, Parker said. The government has set up a fund to help attract such events. The first event for the new track will be an international drag race meeting in early January. In March the extended circuit will host its first big car race meeting, with all the top New Zealand championship classes including the Toyota Racing Series single-seaters, which are too fast to run on the small circuit. |

That's hardly justifiable is it, a circuit run by horse racing is very much a last choice option, as why would you want to deal with people who don't give a stuff about motor racing. |

Pukekohe was built on land leased from the racing club over 40 years ago,its been funding the hayburners all that time, whats the problem with that?I would expect the same thing happens at Sandown does it not?
