i think where he is right now is a good place to be next year, as long as the engineers stick around and there's no ownership ballet. him and stanaway there next year would either work perfectly and get the most out of the pair of them or end up in tears.

i don't know if it is that much of a better field this year - there's more recognised quality and the big names at the front but it's difficult to find a constant to compare and contrast.

couple of notes about testing today - it was warm and dry but windy this afternoon, and the weather really was very british in the morning. pal kiss was silly quick again, and it's good to see abt getting the hang of things. otherwise, da costa threw it off to cause the final red flag and didn't get a proper go on new tyres, korjus was the quickest for the majority of the afternoon session, and it's good to see bird back up at the pointy end again after a few quiet races.

everything's relative isn't it? you might not have much money compared to a bianchi, but you've got a lot more than someone right at the back of the grid. or the guy who couldn't even afford to get to the grid in the first place.

I don't why but I get a chuckle every time I picture this.

Advantage Bianchi then, with Bianchi taking pole, Bird 4th and Frijns down in 6th.

Felix Da Costa wins, after a superb pass on Bird at the sector 3 chicane. Someone forgot to tell him that it isn't an overtaking spot...

Bird is 2nd, Frijns 3rd. Bianchi lost a lot of ground at the start, spent most of the race in 5th, then dropped to 7th in the penultimate lap, after a very hazardous divebomb attempt on Magnussen ended in a spin.

Frijns now leading the championship by 4 on Bianchi, and 15 on Bird...

Idiotic from Bianchi. I can see him lose the championship now as a result of what happened today.

He has that Grosjean quality about him where he's extremely quick on his day, but keeps making silly little errors which makes you question if he's the full package.

It seems to me that Grosjean and Bianchi are slightly different cases.

Grosjean's problem is more like a lack of situation awareness, or a lack of "survival instinct". It seems that he is often caught by that small moment of "inattention"(maybe not the right word when it comes to professional single seater racing, but nevermind) that ruins a whole race.

Bianchi is more like, often pushing too hard and trying risky overtaking moves that have little chance of success. He seems to have a fetish for divebombing moves from a very, very long way back in particular.

IMHO, Grosjean=Clumsy, and Bianchi=Over-Aggressive.

I'm amazed I'm still the only one to vote for Sam Bird)) Da Costa is a bit like Ellinas, helping the poor championship leader. Let's see tomorrow, Frijns will be very hard to beat.

bird said his tyres were shot after 3 laps so all things considered he did an excellent job keeping da costa behind for that long. bianchi had a complete 'mare - that move on magnussen was never on. he's had more than one race where he couldn't find any pace until the end of the race this season though. motorland race 1 at least, i think as well one of the silverstone races.

To be fair to Bianchi, his reputation from GP2 was somewhat undeserved.

Ok so my question about how Bianchi went from pole to 7th has been answered.

So he's got all to do tomorrow which he's more than capable of.

exactly. i don't think it's possible to stay out of trouble in gp2. but let's not allow the facts to get in the way of a good grudge

i'm not sure it's fair to accuse him of being over aggressive either. if you watch him in combat he's actually very sensible and fully capable of knowing when it's time to leave it till later in the lap or keep his foot in. the same with frijns.

this one gets filed under "schoolboy error", alongside putting it in the gravel at the nurburgring. these things happen.

fwiw... weather update: the forecasts got it horribly wrong today, though it is finally now raining. expect a damp track for qualifying, certainly for the eurocup session though since there's nearly 40 of them it might have dried out by the time the fr3.5's get out on track. god knows what it'll do tomorrow - it'll either be a dingy race or a dry but windy and humid race again like today.

As Romain Grosjean can tell him, drivers can easily pick up a reputation. If Bianchi does win Formula Renault 3.5 and make it to F1 his GP2 reputation will soon be behind him. I do worry for him if he doesn't win this year though. 2 years in a top team in GP2 with only 1 win, and failing to win against less experienced drivers in Formula Renault 3.5, might be cause for Ferrari to drop him and concentrate on Raffaele Marciello.

If it is wet tomorrow though...Bianchi was good in the rain at Paul Ricard...

Frijns starting 4th for race 2, Bianchi 7th.

Top 3 is Aleshin, Pic and Da Costa.

Bianchi has crashed more times into another driver and look he is a Ferrari program driver and reserve for Force India.
