ALMS Rnd 5: Utah 13-15 Jul 2007

This week marks Round 5 of the ALMS championship. It's a first time event at a brand new track near Salt Lake City, Utah. I watched the AMA superbike race from Miller Motorsports Park on Speed. The track is long with some fast and slow bits. It's also very plain looking with little to no vegetation. Looks like Qatar. Temperature should be in the mid to upper 90's during the day. Although the race starts at 6pm local time on Saturday.

The entry list is about at its weakest. But the Audi R10s are back and dare I say that this could be an Aston Martin track, especially with the Vette restrictions. The GT classes should provide the best excitement this weekend.

22 is very, very poor, but providing most teams perform upto their potential, particualrly Dyson and Aston, there should be some good racing.

If, as you say, this is a quick circuit, Dyson should have the upper hand on Porsche.

Any timescale when we can expect a few more entries, Lexus, Zytek, Radical etc.?

P2's a real dissapointment, with only Intersport sticking around with Porsche.

I thought Risi were running two cars?

BK cracked up their car, and the second Risi at Lime Rock.

The second Risi car wasn't to be a full time effort until funding can be found.

Erki has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
I think all times are given in East Coast time which is 5 hours ahead of GMT.

Hello

I'm really looking forward to this race because its on a new circuit and not just some micky mouse circuit either. Going by what I've seen on the web it looks great and its a shame the entry for the race is lower than normal. You'ed think people would be desperate to get there.

I'm just a bit worried at only 22 starters, normally the car count doesn't bother me too much - but this track is 4.5 miles long, that means 0.2 miles per car - even if only 5 cars retire it'll be 1 car every 1/4 mile!

It's a bit confusing, since the event schedules one can download are given in local track time, but the TV schedules are in ET and the CBS broadcast over here starts an hour late.

I make it 11(local)+7=18:00(London).

I'm posting this at about 10am in the same timezone as the race, so that should also be one hour from the timestamp on this post.

I think it would be better to give a flow of cars/second, because a time gap between cars expresses itself as a greater distance at higher speeds. Miles/car is only accurate if they travel at a constant speed.

The Event Schedule link posted above states a 6 pm (18h00) start in Utah which is 8 pm (20h00) on the East coast of the US. Add five hours for GMT and you have 01h00 BST.

TV on the East coast of the US will be TAPE DELAY, shown on Sunday at 14h00 and edited down from 2:45 to fit in a two hour TV bock (1:40 of racing, the balance in advertising and promotion). Hopefully they will not miss any of the `action' during commercial breaks.

Perhaps I should record the audio fom Radio Le Mans and use it during the TV broadcast so as not to be disturbed by the inane commentary.

Poo. I knew I should have actually checked the schedule rather than just assume it started an hour before the broadcast.

I assume you are referring to the test session? According to http://www.americanlemans.com/News/Article.aspx?ID=2273 the difference between Aston Martin and Corvette was 0.5 sec.
Quote:
Thursday, Sarrazin was a full second ahead of the sister Aston Martin of Tomas Enge and Darren Turner. The two Corvettes were about a half second better back of their chief rivals.

The two Penske cars were on top at 2:24.143 and 2:24.147. The lead Audi R10 was at 2:25.613 with the second car back about half a second.

The Risi Ferrari set the quickest time in GT2 with a 2:46.050.

So, the P1's do have an advantage over the RS Spyders, and Dyson is right up there for now.

Intersport 7 seconds slower than Penske Porsche!

This isn't a true reflection of the cars performance as RML have been quicker in their LMP2 Lola than their old, restricted LMP1 'MG'.

The Highcroft 'MG' set a 2.25.xxx, so the Intersport Lola should have been capable of at least matching this time.

Aston 3 seconds quicker than Corvette!

Partially because turbo engines have an advantage on higher altitude.

The race has just finished on MotorsTV.

An entertaining end. The difference in the classes was obvious.
And a fortunate yellow for the Aston.

Good fun.

Do you perhaps think that with the pace of the Astons now compared with the 'Vettes, P&M may call for some of the 'performance balancing' restrictions put on the vettes to be reconsidered?

It also appears as if the number of viewing locations was limited. I'm in Atlanta and am used to walking around Road Atlanta, with both inside and outside corner viewing locations. Were there any spectators at all inside the track? It looked like viewing was restricted to the outside of the track. The only place I saw a crowd, and that's putting it mildly, was in the grandstands.

It's not often that new facility is built that includes a nice long track. How did it turn out so bland?
