If you have the opportunity, read the Colditz Story by Pat Reid, who himself was the Escape Officer at Colditz and eventually made one of the sucessful Home Runs.

Also the Later Days at Colditz, which tabulates Rolt's glider episode.

Apparently the plan was to drop an old cast iron bathtub filled with rubble and anything else heavy circa 70 feet through floors and whatever, to launch the glider along a sort of railway line!

Amazing man: bearing in mind that he was not released as a POW until 1945 as like them all was semi-starved and quite weak.

Yet in a few short years, he was back competing at the highest level and winning Le Mans!

Incredible man: incredible achievements and an object lesson to many of the wimpy girly "athletes" of today.

Aww that's a real shame. One of the guys that helped to build the legend of Jaguar at Le Mans.

I think we'll have our own tribute to Tony at LM this year. That would seem to be a fitting memory.
