Look out for the 01' version. Ive heard the paddle shift (not really paddles but buttons) will be nearly as quick as changing gears as a modern f1 car.
Just went from a 1998 M3 (four door with embarrassing slush box) to a 2002 M3 with the SMG II tranny. I put a picture up in the "Car" forum. The transmission works as advertised. BTW, the steering wheel has paddles, not buttons, and the little stick in the traditional location on the console can also be used for shifts. I have friend who had a Ferrari 360 with the F1 transmission, and having ridden in that car I can tell you that the BMW version is both faster and more civilized. As to whether it's as fast as a true F1 gearbox ... hmmmm ... if someone would provide me with a drive in an F1 car, I'll let you know. Bet I could go faster than Lauda.

My wife refuses to drive a stick shift, but I love her anyway, and thus I'm stuck. The SMG II is the best solution yet. The wife does love M3s, however, so at least she appreciates a car that drives well, even if she doesn't like driving fast. The one fly in the ointment for her was the lack of back doors for the kids. When we picked up the car she said, "You didn't tell me it was a two door." I said, "They don't make a four door anymore. And I showed you pictures!" (She had even seen one in the flesh at BMW's display at the first USGP.) She just kept repeating, "You didn't tell me it was a two door." The salesperson wanted to crawl under the seat. Then I realized why I was surprised it was an issue: "But sweetheart, we used to have a two-door car a few years ago." She shot back, "Yeah, and I hated that car, too." If looks could kill.... Anyway, a few days later she was laughing about it, so I think the marriage will survive.

The car is much more racy than the old M3. More grip, quicker turn in, less body roll, and MUCH faster. The Dynamic Stability Control allows a little wheelspin, so you can induce oversteer even with it on (which helps protect the car from my stupidity). The only time it feels heavy and less impressive than the old one is when braking. I'm sure the stopping distances are excellent, but I don't get that same no-nonsense, stop-on-a-dime feel I used to get. The steering has somewhat less feel also, but it's improved for 2002, and I don't have a problem with it -- especially seeing as how the car goes where you point it better than any road car I've ever driven.

i've driven my parents m3, and was really dissappointed with the way it handles. it is a 1998 model, and it's a convertible, and the chassic shake is ridiculous. it handles no better than my old 316 did.

the new one looks aaaaaaaabsolutely gorgeous. and the paddle thing sounds like good fun too

I drive a 94 Honda Civic. However it has been modded with a t3/t04b turbocharger and suspension mods. I run low boost (7psi) so the hp is about 170 to the wheels. That is about 65 over stock. No too shabby! At 12 psi it feels NICE! But might send a rod through the block!
I could go on with all the mods but I dont think anyone would care too much. Oh I could go on forever, my girlfriend thinks that I am having an affair; I am, with the car.

I drive a 1988 GT Fiero that I wouldn't trade for the world. Just getting ready to convert the 2.8 liter engine to a 3.1, can't wait to finish!

I would have loved a Fiesta 1.3 Sport (preferably supersport) for my first car but I couldn't find one. In the end I opted for a 1.3 Ghia whick was mechanically identical.

Now I drive a Mondeo ST200.

Bit of a mixture really.

I have an '96 Alfa Romeo 155 V6 - in Alfa red with the graphite black touring car alloys - it's the special edition one with the full sport pack - its looks exactly like Tarquini's car from the '94 BTCC. It sounds great and goes like ****

Plus a Volvo 940 estate - nuff said.............

Currently i'm driving the last production of an Alfa 146 in which i bought it last year..previously was a Citroen ZX. Over here European cars dosen't have a resale value, unless it's a Bimmer or Mercedez. Lotsa ppl here would use either Japanese or Proton cars as the resale value are quite high.

BTW...right now I drive an Olds Aurora, but only because the Audi A-6 salespeople were such utter pigs that they drove me back to GM..
I hate FWD but for a front driver,on dry pavement it handles quite well, but I'd sure like it better if it was RWD.
Other vehicle a 97 Chevy Blazer...got to have one to haul the dogs around..

Currently a 1985 Mitsubishi sigma and an 85 Fairmont sedan. However, sold my '64 Phoenix 2 weeks ago, which was quite a nice cruiser and sold '79 Trans am just after Christmas when the engine developed a death rattle due to the oil feed pick up dropping off. Had a couple of Trans ams and they both drove terrible, don't handle, they do not accelerate fast, but they do look good when in good condition.

G'day LuckyPhil, welcome to the forum and where you the floor director on Hey Hey? :-)

My Dad had an XF, bloody good car!

Actually, a Sigma AND an XF should be enough to get you elected as the Mayor of Morayfield, aside from Geminis, that's all they have there.

Did your Trans Am have the chook on the bonnet?

No, but wouldn't of minded, would of been a cushy little job for 20 years or so. Nah, maybe not, wouldn't want to go back to Melbourne,......it's too cold.

Got rid of that when the car was restored a while back. Wouldn't put one back on myself as they are a key magnet at nights and as they cost about $600.00 and ages to fit properly it's just not worth the trouble.

I've submitted my applcation to join the electorate of Morayfield and I WILL go for mayor. Are your sure my cars will do the trick!
