JE! The guy is a boil on the backside, a bunion on the ball of your foot, a bump on the bonce, and bumptious cry baby who does not know how to lose, and believes he has a God given right to win every race. He is a disgrace to what was once a sport.

On the other hand he is the face of modern youth, and I am very, very, old.

Naturally you are entitled to a different view, but it does not change anything.

Would you not agree that under whichever system of measurement, 30 degrees at Silverstone would be unpleasant!

He is not that bad & is probably the most entertaining driver - certainly better than the Dutch thug, but we'd better not continue this conversation on an historic thread!

Isn't that a form of pre-requisite for most people who are successful in their chosen careers or sports? Especially when most of the others competing have, of necessity, the same opinion.

(At least as far as media reporting and recording of their public and private lives would have us believe.)

The media stuff may, of course, hide a personality with huge insecurities on some cases.

It must be a very strange world in which to live.

Then again, as this is an Historic Forum thread, one might observe that the gentleman in question has yet to appear at Goodwood afaik. As a Brit. that alone must lose him several brownie points.

He has actually attended the FOS at least a few times, both when at McLaren and Mercedes.

I get the feeling that it's not his "scene", and I also share Bob's views now even though I thought that he was a breath of fresh air when he first drove in F1.

Just thinking about the rather strange world in which "top sporting people" exist, Roger Federer, a tennis player who, by age assessment, must be very close to the end of his top flight career, has landed a £230M "kit" sponsorship deal.

Now one can at least see all of his sports wear every time he is on court and in front of the cameras. The Race drivers spend nearly all of the activity time in front of the cameras with their clothing (and now even their helmets) hidden from view.

Just think how much more they could earn if one could see into the cockpits more readily.

Of course, for anyone to be paid that much to wear something with a specific logo on it is entirely insane ... but that's an entirely different matter.

Grant, I would guess that the top flight drivers, from all the different disciplines, are paid to wear different manufacturers suits and helmets, and if not paid, are given the apparel.

This would account for that most peculiar "habit" that drivers have acquired of doing up their collars whenever a camera is pointed in their direction. Just to prove that the Velcro on the product actually works. I find it most odd that at a time when you are all hot and bothered after completing a gruelling race that the driver is expected to keep all the heat in.

And on that note, I think that it is magnificent that Andrew Jordan manages to be drinking out of a Red Bull container on virtually every occasion that he is in interviewed in front of the camera. He couldn't possibly be sponsored by them by any chance!

In film and TV it's called 'product placement'. Just imagine the publicity when Superwoman wears an M&S bra.

Did you notice that F1 drivers balaclavas have now all the sponsors printed on them?
And do you remember that Le Mans drivers were not allowed to remove their helmet when stopped on the track (think it was another strange rule in the 70s)? Removing the helmet meant retiring. Do you think it was possible to remove underwear an keep the helmet?? We should ask a female french Alpine driver if she remembers something about that.

Tut tut Bob, a sexist comment, that.

I mean, why not Superman wearing the brassiere?

Or Superindeterminateperson?

Gerard, is France as crazy as England these days?

We have schools banning teenage male students from wearing short trousers in the heat although it seems they can wear skirts instead. So long as they are the correct uniform.

But other schools have reportedly, banned girls from wearing skirts for some reason.

Does this sort of madness in the education system occur in France as well? The young minds being educated in this peculiar fashion must surely come to the conclusion that all teachers and thus all adults are entirely, madly irrational and best ignored whenever possible.

Indeed - but £230 million?

Really £230million?

I have long suspected that the neck closure advertising space, appearing in all interviews, is probably extremely valuable and the drivers fully understand which side their bread can be buttered.

Still, at least it provides some degree of smartness standard for the global audience.

I seem to recall the practice of awarding garlands to the winners was stopped because sponsors complained the garlands blocked their logos on driver suits from being visible on camera..

Crazy? Nope! More and more stupid I'd say. The whole system has to be changed. In some hot districts, teachers consider to buy a bulletproof jacket than a piece of chalk!
We have been fighting against religious symbols at school with few success. In the other hand, we're supposed to be a secular country, which sounds fine and fair to my ears. But looking at our official calendar it still shows many catholic feasts.

I don't think you are allowed to say 'chalk' in the UK these days Gerard, & you certainly must not mention 'blackboard' as that's bound to offend some poor little snowflake!

I have to say I find the relative lack of political correctness in France compared with UK or US rather refreshing.
