100th Anniversary of AC Cars in Thames Ditton

Not sure that this is the appropriate spot for this, so apologies to the Mods in advance.

I hope that this will be of interest to some Tenthers. I spotted an ad on the front page of the local free newspaper last weekend.

The Owners’ Club of the former AC cars, Britain’s first car manufacturer, will mount a plaque on Ferry Works on August 21, to celebrate the centenary of the company’s move to Thames Ditton.

That will happen at 2.30pm.

From 11.00am to 4.30pm the AC Owners' Club will stage a Concours d'Elegance on Giggs Hill Green, Thames Ditton. Sure to be some Cobras involved.

I am sure that some of you might like to pop along to see this, as I am local I am certainly going to be there.

I have just had a shoeing over on The Nostalgia Forum regarding the claims about the history of AC Cars.

I posted this in reply before anyone here gets the size 12s on. Apologies for the misinformation.

A rookie's mistake, assuming that the hack who wrote the piece in the Elmbridge Guardian that I quoted would have applied the same diligence and fact checking that I would, when writing an article.

http://www.elmbridgeguardian.co.uk/n..._rich_history/

Pre-WW1 cars are not my area of speciality, so I do not have the knowledge to spot an obvious howler, but I should have checked. So apologies for that.

The point of the post remains valid though, that there will be a Concours on Sunday, free to see, of some historic high performance cars.

The other benefit was to encourage me to get the Peter Brock Daytona Cobra book off the shelves and immerse myself in that for a few hours.

All we need is some sunshine on Sunday, not much in evidence here in the parish of Esher today.

I think a historic race meeting for ACs would have been appropriate called 'Aces High; Cobra Strikes!' Seriously, it would have been good; too late this year, I guess.

Great.

I will most certainly go down and here's hoping the weather will be dry.

I used to have a flat off the green at Rythe Court in the early 70's and remember looking at Guy Salmon's showroom next door every evening.

More happy memories.

Off topic comment alert
I have to type this or my brain will explode!

Hmm, cars and pubs. I was looking at this thread and thinking (incorrectly) of the HWM garage in New Zealand Avenue, Walton on Thames. That then led me to recall some pleasant evenings in the Swan (a Young's pub at the time). "Sigh*

Thanks for reading, you've been a wonderful audience. Don't forget to try the veal and tip your waitress. We now return you to the topic

The Swan in Walton on Thames............memories of misspent youth come flooding back...........or rather vague recollections of the time as a result of being over-refreshed.

More local pub related stuff on The Kings Head Shepperton can be found here

back on topic, sort of

And for the thirsty who attend Giggs Hill Green will find several pubs within walking distance.

Hi everyone,

Wow what an amazing collection of cars.

Arrived around 3.15pm on a really hot and humid day.

Shame that I could not get there earlier but at least I only had 4 miles to drive.

Here's my first batch of photos - Enjoy

Just love that Aston Martin DB4 similar to one that my late father bought secondhand from Mike Harting at H.W Motors in Walton-on-Thames circa 1964/5 - Reg no: 3BYR
It was originally Goodwood Green and either a 1960 or 1961 car but I last saw it at Brands Hatch in the 80's racing and it had been resprayed white. Maybe the registration number had been transferred (who knows) !!

How I love older cars but some more modern cars are awesome too.

All cars have such interesting characters.
