If Chevrolet somehow cannot get FiA Homologation in time for Brazil, could they use the Lacetti's?

Aslak Vind should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Matt..

Its the FIA, trust me, they will get the homologation. If there is a commercial upside, FIA will know how to gain from it. Sad but true..

Yeah, I also guess the "homologation holdup" is mostly down to how much dispensations they should be allowed to have to be reasonably competitive from pretty much day 1. The underpowered old engine eg will likely continue to yield them the same weight break as on the lacetti, but they likely want more than that (and seat and bmw are likely against).

I suspect that part of the homologation issue is that the road car isn't on sale yet. The FIA will need to confirm the minimum build requirement has been met and that the road car is being built to the homologated spec.

Technical issues aside - hoorah, 8 days till we go racing again - my these winters are surely getting longer!

Still - much like the F1 season, there's not a lot of change in terms of teams and drivers. Apart from the Cruze and Hernandez and Porteiro's swap - everything's the same...but will the results be?

I thought the Cruze will get a new engine or thoroughly updated engine?

If Chevy goes bankrupt (in the UK? or Globally?), it could always appear as a Vauxhall Cruze?

With new engine regs coming in 1 (possibly 2, if delayed) years? That would be an awful short time to recoup the development investment of a new engine. Lada seems to be doing it though, but they also seem to not be at the brink of extinction and need to get up on par with the rest.

Chevy is General Motors, if it goes bankrupt then Vauxhall also is off! But don't worry, it just won't happen

Not sure about that. Think Vauxhall falls under the Opel branch of GM, and Opel for sure will survive even if GM goes belly up.

I wouldn't say for sure. It's possible that Opel could survive GM's demise, maybe even likely. But not sure at all.

The German state has already show quite high willingness to pour in large sums of cash to keep their auto industry floating during these harsh times. So Opel wont die in the nearby future. But of course, what happens in 3-10 years will depend on future Opel car sales, they will not get indefinite future funding from the state if they cant make a profit.

Actually Merkel has said there would be no preferential treatment for Opel (whatever that means). Apparently the plan Opel presented still leaves too many questions unanswered for our government to make a firm commitment.

Off topic?

Looking forward to the season beginning again. I'm curious to see what the performances of the cars with no success ballast is like.

I was actually thinking about that the other day. It could be quite interesting, because, relative to the old system, it puts the fight for the driver championship directly opposed to the manufacturer championship.

Ie it still makes sense for the manufacturer aiming for the M title to put 5 cars on the grid with good drivers, but for the individual driver trying to take home the D title it will make things much harder to have 4 competent drivers to "fight" with, since if you have a bad weekend, but at least 2 of your teamates doesnt, you still can find yourself penalized for the next weekend.

So I think it adds some interesting aspects and tactical conserns for both teams and drivers. Should you try to find a team with 2-3 cars and go for driver title or 4-5 cars and aim for manufacturer title? Im not sure we will see the full effects of this for 2009, but if they keep the same for 2010+ it could be quite interesting to see how things pan out, especially if a few more brands joins 2010+.

If it's stays like that, only Lada will benefit from the new wighting rule.

If you believe that, you didnt fully understand the new rules. There is not going to be any weights added first 2 weekends, but after that, if the time diffs stay exactly as those numbers Chevy would get -40kg (and -50kg if a further 0.003s slower) and Lada and Petrol SEATs -60kg.
