10 sports supremo jumps ship to the V8 organisation

Ten is expected to tell staff today that Sam Heard, its head of marketing for sport, is leaving to take up a senior role with the V8 Supercars championship.

(Television) industry speculation on Heard's move will focus on whether it means a big shift in Ten's digital sports broadcasting strategy via digital channel One. It is widely regarded as a failure.

Heard had been Ten's vice-president of US programming in Los Angeles before returning to Australia last May to resume the role of marketing the network's ambitious push to become a dominant sports player with Ten's One channel.

After reading that, it certainly appears that ONE HD's days of sport only are numbered. Shame really, we need a sport only network, and quite surprising, as Aussies are a sport mad nation. I guess that some of the less popular sports, such as the basketball will disappear off the screens with ratings like that. This will mean that we will now be back to being fed a diet of bat and ball games. Here's hoping that 10/ONE get the V8's when the contract re-negotiations take place. The up side is that ONEHD may become a more motorsport (V8, F1, MOTOGP, nascrap) based station, when the smoke clears.

It appears that there is no love lost between the new investors in the TEN Network and the incumbent management, with a number of staff changes apparent in recent weeks. The news focus station of #10, the young adult focus of #11 and the sports focus of #12 from all reports fragments & confuses the message too heavily for media buyers...

OneHD was annoying yesterday, to see that the NASCAR event wasnt shown... while they showed the Rolex GT series...

As for a new resource for V8Supercar Television... they do need help building a package... something that looks and feels the same each weekend, to a high professional standard, with the same kinds of inclusions in each telecast.

Of interest, there is an ad on 7MATE at the minute, with Pink aboard, showing that there will be lots of coverage of the V8Supercars on 7MATE in 2011. Quite what that entails was not made clear...

Live qualifying on 7MATE would be great (and not repeated in the main race broadcast, allowing that to show live too...)... but then again logic rarely dictates reality...

I'm astounded that One is not considered sucessful. Everybody I've asked says it's their favourite digital only channel.

How much does the fight over the new CEO at 10, who they pinched from 7 relate to these moves? Stokes and Leckie are a touch miffed.
They have finished up in court over it and that puts an interesting light on James Packers departure from the Board of 10. He of course has a significant share holding in 10, and is a joint venture partner with Stokes in Foxtel.
And of course what do all hese people who are changing jobs know about the likely future of the SEL holding in VESA?

James Erskine negotiates the TV rights for V8s historically & he is taking SEL out of VESA.
Will SEL be involved in the TV negotiations this time round.

There are only 5,000 ratings boxes Australia wide deciding what you and I watch. I got offered a ratings box twice back in 2009 but I told them I couldn't be bothered as I pretty much download every overseas TV show I watch.

I think I read somewhere their highest rating program is the F1 telecasts...on that result wouldn't you assume they need to get Indy Cars back ?

I hope he puts the programms back on standard definition as well as HD so I can record them rather than miss out altogether!!!

If you're in a regional area mate I wouldn't be holding my breath - all of the TV channels seem to very "metro-centric"!

If you live in a metro area a different set top box would fix that for you.
