I did 2 really good days at the show this year, Thursday and Saturday. I did the live action arena thing yesterday and I found it very hard to shot in there.

Where they've expanded it into this kidney shaped bit, it wasn't as good for photographers at all! Your phone pics are great quality falce.

Be interested if anyone has pics of the F Vee (matte black) on the 750 stand.

Hi there,

Had a great day out at Autosport International yesterday took loads of pictures and want to share a few of them with you.

Lighting was really tough and made it really difficult to take decent photos.

See what you think.

Thanks, not sure why it's slow - seems ok to me. Might just be the server struggling - they're only 100-odd KB each. I'll investigate!

There seemed to be a fair drifting contingent there, and the live show is definitley tipping in that direction.

I really thought Autosport could do better.

Aha the *is drifting motorsport question*

well i'm sure the Neanderthals who first saw a car with aero aids asked the same thing!

Competitive drifting is Motorsport every bit as much as something like an autotest - except with drifting it's all about higher speed manouevres and the target for you to get close to is moving rather than stationary.

Drifting is also in part responsible for getting a whole new wave of youngsters interested in motorsport in general - and into car modifications for performance rather than just nasty bolt on bodykits.

But that wasn't meant to be what this post was about (oops)

Regarding the live action arena - i'm afraid i was disappointed this year. Big build up about an F1 car - which then proceeded to sit on a podium. I'm sorry but that's a real let down - If I want to see an F1 car parked up from a distance I may as well just look at a photo.

some of the livelier demos in the arena were great to watch (class 7s come to mind) but sadly a short course over a super slippy surface is never going to allow something like a Jedi to really impress (although a couple of the drivers had some good amounts of low speed opposite lock!)

I just think it's a shame when a lot of the cars going round had to stick with flooring it on the straight briefly, then lots of braking and coast round, before flooring it on the straight the other way.

Last year the off-roaders were excellent - seeing the Bowler and Range rover coming down the track right in front of the crowd and getting serious air was just the sort of thing that makes a show like that worthwhile.

Agree completely. The costs of doing it would be ridiculous and the audience would all be deaf, but having an F1 car even going fairly slowly round the arena would be a lot more impressive than looking at one on a podium, especially since there were already a grid full in the halls. Also would have been good to have the off-roaders back like last year.

Good to see that where possible, there was plenty of sideways action and showboating! That's what it's all about in a slippy arena too tight to really race in.

Hi Guys , yep ... ive just about recoverd from last Thurs ...

must have walked the floors over 4 times during the day .

still...
As to the F1 build up at the live arena .. i too fell into that "dear god an F1 car, and ive no ear defenders" trap , but alas no such luck, but i felt the space left for us lowley media guys really was pityfull , a small area and in no way related to the direction of the track ... never mind i did manage few crackin shots even at 1:15sec i even cranked the camera upto ISO1600 and turned the IS on !

so , a small selection of the 568 shots i took are on the NEC link off my page..

feel free to take a look .

www.motorsport-images.org.uk

best wishes all Tony

Yeah, the three feet of fencing that 15 photographers were expected to share was what I've come to expect, despite all the moaning last year. Went back into the arena early on a public day though, and was right on the fence so that was a little better.

Even with the best positioning, it'll never be easy to get good pics in that dark arena. Seems to be getting darker year on year. Bring back the nice backlighting they had a couple of years ago...

was my first time at autosport last weekend. I went up out of interest to get some practice, I've only been shooting motorsport since june last year. the lighting was dire and i realised this when I got home and looked at the shots that I'd managed to get

if anyone wants a look this is where my shots are -

i'd appreciate any comments and no questions about my nickname for my flickr account.

I thought the show was very good to be honest. I was there on the Ford Stand for Sat/Sun. Not as busy but was good weekend. We were lucky enough to have the lovely Emma on the stand for the Fiesta Crew. Will try and get some photo's on this week if i can.
Joking aside.. Took me 2 days to get the feeling back in my feet

The live action arena is awful for photos, as has been stated the press area is woefully inadequate. When you do manage to get a good shot, there is generally a haze on the pictures due to the lighting and the tyre smoke that quickly fills the arena up. Getting rid of the haze and retaining accurate colours often proves beyond me in photoshop!

Some of my pics from the daytime show....

Luckily I managed to get access to the centre and a good spot on the first turn for the evening oval racing show on Saturday, which was quite a bit better than the daytime shows. Some more pics...

Regards

Matt
