OK, so if it rains can we just let that be the final results of the race? Probably not...

Nice job by Casey Mears to qualify 15th in his first Cart race. Although as we all know, qualifying means nothing in a 500 miler.

Liz goes out on a limb again

Wrong, Liz - check your practice times: You had Montoya doing 242 MPH in practice. And don't blame me for the title - I just clicked on the title box, and that title popped up - swear to God!!

I copied that off both Speedvision and Autosport, so it's their fault and not mine if it's wrong!

Anyway it was probably fastest time without having a tow, which Montoya admitted led to his personal fast time yesterday.

In North America lap records can only be set during qulaifying or the race, so practice or testing times don't count.

Anyone remember what Gugelman's record time was and when he set it? It was around 240 as I remember. Before the stupid Hanford Device that was supposed to slow the cars down.

Our local station is still referring to My Gil as "Gilles D. Furr-ANN". Perhaps if he wins the championship they will LEARN TO PRONOUNCE HIS NAME PROPERLY.

I quite honesly think that you can start from anywhere and win a 500 miler. So, qualifying doesn't mean anything. Maybe they should just draw names out of a hat for the qualifying order for this race.

Sorry. Liz, but the World Closed Course record was set about 10 years ago by AJ Foyt at the GM Proving grounds at something like 279 MPH. Lynn St. James had set the record earlier ('86, I think) at Michigan Int'l Speedway at 241 mph.

While fast, it's only a track record.

Nobody else remembers Foyt's record, then, as all the websites and papers are saying that Gil has set the new record and that Gugelman had it (set in 1997, I found out) before him. Do you have any documentation?

I don't know where it is officialy listed, but here's what I know about it:

Two cars were prepared, both were enclosed body specials using an '86 MARCH Indy car chassis as the base, and the Oldsmobile 4-banger with twin turbos. One was prepped by GM Special Projects, and the other by a group of old-time hot-rodders. One of the engineers in the hot-rodder group was a guy named Chuck Matthews, then a GM Senior Research engineer, who is currently one of Montoya's engineers, with racing experience going back another 25 years, including time with Jacques Villeneuve in his Can Am days.

The GM prepped engine, while it had better HP, proved to be extremely unreliable, so after many attempts, it was abandoned in favor of the hot-rodders version. Foyt himself was.by this time, getting impatient with the engineers & set the car up to his own specs, which included pushing the brake pads away from the rotors as far as possible to decrease drag. His first run included trap speeds of 300 mph on the straights, and dirt-tracking style sideways speeds in the corners in the 270 range. Call Foyt what you want, but his driving skills & shear bravery is unquestionable - it was one ballsy run ! He was probably the only guy alive who could have pulled it off.

If my memory is correct, it was done in either '88 or '89, and there was a great story written about it in Road & Track. I don't know what the problem is with these commentators, but I also remember tv commentators mentioning it during a brodcast of the Michigan 500 a few years ago whn speeds hit the 230 mark.

Was this a legitimate race car, or something prepared to set a speed record, like those things Craig Breedlove drives? Did he race it after setting that record and how did it fare?

The car was called the Oldsmobile Aerotech. They had short- and long-tail versions of the car, not sure which car set the record, but they were beautiful machines.

While I'm impressed at the speed (241 mph) of Gil's run, to me, it's a bit like NASCAR qualifying at Talladega: hold the pedal down, turn the wheel, and it's all up to the car to determine how fast you are. Perhaps I'm wrong, but that's the impression I get.

And Liz, did you see Al Jr. (or Widdle Al as you call him) in the Penske pits, congratulating him? I'm sure he could have done that given the same equipment last year. Jr. was forced to suffer with a Penske chassis, a Mercedes engine and Goodyears, none of which were on par with the current Reynard/Honda/Firestone combination Gil enjoys.

No, I didn't see him. And right now I don't care a flying donut about him.

Sorry if that upsets anyone, but I just happen to think right now it's more interesting that GIL WON not what somebody else couda, woulda, shoulda mighta done GIL DID IT! ... and right now that is all that is important to me except that Helio is okay, of course, and was not injured in that very scary accident he had.

Of course if Mikey had set the world speed record on a closed course, you'd be wetting yourself to say how wonderful it was and how it proved he was the greatest driver who ever got into a race car.

But today I do not care.

GIL WINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hardly, Liz. My opinion wouldn't change, no matter the driver.

However, I must congratulate you, and Gil for the championship and Bella and Christian (even though Bella seems to have the hatred of Americans you criticize Americans for their supposed hatred of foreigners) for winning the race.

Bella doesn't hate Americans. She is merely exulting at the fact that Mikey was getting all the attention and all the press at N-H and of course Big C won the $millions anyway. Entirely understandable, I think.

Forza Brazil!

At the risk of sounding like our dear departed Franklin, THE World Closed Course Record, is just that: THE record. What Gil set was a record for some subtitle thereof.

241 is still bloody quick,though !
