G,day all. I need help in obtaining any reference material pertaining to any 120Y's that may have raced in Australia.

Here is a link which is all I can find at the moment;

Of particular interest is the silver and black car number 66, All gear engineering sponsered vehicle. Also wish to know at what track this photo was taken at.

John Mott raced a V8 powered 120Y Coupe Sports Sedan in the late 80s, was a wild machine....

Didn't the Parr family from northern NSW run a car at Lakeside back in the 90s?

That black car doesn't look Australian. We don't tend to have that style of numbering, nor that sort of background to the numbers.

Mike Griffin raced a 120Y with a PP rotary - was one of the very first successful Rotary-powered sports sedans.

Hugh Bell from Victoria rallied one, as did Murray Coote from Queensland. Both these cars had L-series Nissan four-cylinder engines, from memory.

There was a very quick 120Y IP car running in SA a few years back driven by Mark Short, running an Adam Allen turbo motor. Haven't seen this car for a few years though.

The thing certainly was a rocket ship, I never thought 120Ys could go that fast! Short wasn't afraid to turn the boost up either........... sometimes past the levels recommended by the engine supplier........... with spectacular results.

Not sure if it's the same car or not, but there is now a turbo'd 120Y in the NSW Championship..... could be a sister car or just built on the same principles... being run by Doug Moss.

A couple of years ago I used to compete against a guy who ran an ex George Fury works rally 120y, racing at the Warwick super sprints. At the time the body wasn't the greatest (as expected for a rally car), & it was for sale for around the $8000 mark IIRC.... Looked like a fun ride...

I'm sure I've seen a 6cyl powered car somewhere (in Vic) too, either a sports sedan or autocross/club hillclimb car if that's any interest.

I'm not sure if it is still there, but I used to know where there was a 2 door sedan bodyshell in reasonable nick (like the white #7 car in the link)

Sultan, did Nissan run 120Ys in its works rally team? I remember Bluebirds but not 120Ys.

Am I correct in recalling Furious George cutting a 19-second lap at Sydney Showground in a 120Y with a fairly awe-struck Barry Lake in the jeezus seat?

Thanks for all the information and updates....Now if I can only obtain photographic material for reference. Can anyone confirm that the 120's ran at bathurst ? Sold all my old bathurst tapes so cannot confirm myself.

Would any of these vehicles be classed as historics ? if so is there a register of vehicles somewhere ?

I saw a photo somewhere on the web showing a 120 with Ric Shaw driving.

[Was in the workshop last I saw it...so yes]
Have you any contact details bullett ? I have someone keen to research and photograph all 120y 'race bred vehicles' ( why...buggered if I know...lol..maybe if it was the later mean and clean bluebirds and 2dr skylines I would)

Thanks all.

Really? I saw it at Macrow Exhausts some time last year. Do you know who bought it? when it will begin to race?

Ross Dunkerton started winning Aus titles in a 240Z, then a 260Z, a 710SSS ...?... then a Stanza.
George Fury was around in the Stanza days. What ever happened to the Stanza that Howard Marsden prepared for George to race at Sandown, the first time I saw him on a race track.
120Y, not a factory race or rally car as I remember.

The 710 was the Japanese version of our 180B. It had a twin-cam engine, independant rear end and lots of other goodies.

The Stanza Fury raced at Sandown was one of the team's rally cars, coverted with lower, harder springs and so on.

Datsun ran 1200 sedans and coupes in production touring car and group C racing, but never 120Ys to my knowledge. The 120Y was a bit heavier and wasn't expected to be competitive in its class (under 1300cc).

Datsun also ran a 240K one year at Bathurst - up against XU1 Toranas and the like it stood little chance.

There have been plenty of 120Ys in club racing and rallying, especially in classes where they weren't stuck with the A12 engine. Put in an FJ20 or the like and they move along quite nicely.

It was definitely a 4 door...

With all this discussion I hope I haven't got my wires crossed & made a dill of myself... Not that it would be a first...

I'll try & dig up some old photos, surely I'd have a pic of it...

No Sultan, you haven't made a dill of yourself. I asked a motoring journo and he asked Nissan and the answer that came back was this:
"The Datsun Rally Team under Bruce Wilkinson, had a couple of B210 (120Y) coupes which ran under our auspices. We also ran Datsun 710 models at the same time. They were discontinued in 1975. This was prior to the Stanza being released in 1978. There were also a couple of B210s which were running privately at the same time."

You can't get much more definitive than that.

The Parrs hailed from Grafton and had two 1200s & a 120Y. They were all 2 litre Sports Sedans.

I don't believe 120Ys were ever raced as a Touring Car in Australia, therefore they would not be eligible for Historic Touring Car Racing.

I don't recall a 120Y racing at Bathurst. 1200 coupe and sedan did, 240K and 180B SSS but no 120Y thank Christ.
