A standard 1200cc Datsun 120Y would have gotten to about 130 km/h flat strap down Conrod... heaven help you going thru Caltex Chase though, as that amazing steering coupled with Mr Uniroyal's fabulous cross ply tyres and a leaf sprung rear end that sometimes had a mind of its own, combine to make the journey a "dry cleaner" moment...

Bulletproof reliable however... my parents owned one from new and it lasted for over 330,000km and 28 years until the body finally died...

Err, GTR you know they built the Chase in 1987...................

My folks also bought a new 120Y, a wagon and used it as a courier van around the airport in Sydney. It did many hard miles, had several decent shunts and never looked like quitting.

I've only ever ridden in one, which included experiencing total-loss understeer on a fairly innocuous corner at 40km/h...

I used to get a lift to school back in the day in a 120Y. I was like going to school in a jumping castle

You could,
But why get rid of an Australian topic that has actually stayed on topic and not degenerated into a pointless red/blue argument.

This is the one I raced in 1998-2001...'ish. But it was also powered by a 13B PP, so certainly not traditionally Nissan.

The new owner was asking about your car only a few weeks back. He can be contacted on here.

I remember a 120Y delivery van (yep there was a panel van variant) at an auto elec joint i worked at, the radiator was removed to fix a leak and car pushed into the car park. The boss grabbed it at lunchtime to drop home quickly, in the mid summer Albury heat mind you, radiator returned, and the search started for the car. Car found, radiator fitted, water filled, no drama! Air Cooled 120Y! At least for a little while.

120Ys are a popular car in IPRA, current regs allowing SR and FJ engines to be fitted. 1200's, 1600's, Stanza's and 180B's are also eligible and appear from time to time.

Shorty built himself a handy Bluebird, but hasn't seen the same success as he did in his 120Y.

I've had the Jamie Drummond built, George Fury driven 120y in my shed for a while, fitted with a Blydenstein Nissan 240RS FJ24 on 55 DCOE's, option box, 5 link H190 rear, rather large brakes, it was built with Howard Marsdens assistance, and lots of bits from Nissan Motorsports parts bins, for George to use as a rally car from 1982 to 1986, it's sole purpose was to beat the works BDA rally Escorts, which it did.
The FJ24 in this one puts out 290hp at 9600 and 250 ft/lb at 5500

Sultan, on here, recalls the other one I had, I ran it as a "touring car" ( oh really!) at some local Qld tracks approx 10 years ago.it was built by Drummond as a spare shell, caged and suspension done, but no motor, in case the other one got bented in a rally.
GF was also racing in the Bluebirds, with Nissan, the 120y was just for fun in the forests.

It is getting restored back to its 1985 spec, and hopefully coming out to play later in 2010.
My other toy is a rather quick full race Datsun Sports 2000, runs at mostly historic meets, along with a 280Z in Group S prod sports.
Dont get on here much, but anyway, a bit of history for you!

Of particular interest is the silver and black car number 66, All gear engineering sponsered vehicle. Also wish to know at what track this photo was taken at.

All help appreciated.

Thats Clive Spolander who races the car in the "Classic Cars" series in Cape Town, South Africa.
I've got photos of it that was taken in 1992
Those photo's on the cardomain site were all taken at the Killarney Race Circuit in Cape Town.

Hi all, my apologies for the epic forum bump. However, the car mentioned above is the car my father (Peter Cooke) built in the summer of 92/93. Dad built it as a reshell of his previous Escort rotary sports sedan with the view to building a better mouse trap. He was inspired to build a 120 Y after running in the 92 Eastern Creek 6 hour relay race with Bill Nabhan (RX3) and Silvestro Severi (spelling?) who was running a rotary 120Y sports sedan. I am unsure if this was the ex Mike Griffin car but could have been.

Dad bought two 120y's for $150 combined. My younger brother and I drove the car that eventually became the race car until it ran out of petrol around the car park at Dad's work in Thew Parade Dee Why West (where Brian Potts, Mike Dwyer and Tony Mulvuhill had there workshops at the time). The car was then built up into a sports sedan. It was always left hand drive as Dad wanted to sit on the other side of the car to where the exhaust ran due to the heat as it was built to compete in 6 hour relay races. (the Esort was also left hand drive for the same reason). The car was built by Dad and his mates including ex Tony Mulvuhill head mechanic Geoff Cordell who built the motor. The car was run in a variety of super sprints, state level sports sedan races, national level sports sedan races (support races for the touring cars) and 6 hour relay races at Eastern Creek. Dad was part of the outright winning team 3 or 4 times with Bill Nabhan and others. I believe his best lap times at Eastern Creek were low 1 min 40's. Something like 1 min 8's at Wakefield when it had the original tighter fishhook in the infield. I am unsure if it ever ran at Amaroo but the Escort did 55 sec's there.

Dad sold the car around 1998. We would love to know if it still exists and in what form. I'd love to see it on the track again. I would be partial to owning it if the price was right.

Does anyone know of its current whereabouts?

Regards,

Michael Cooke
