Mk1 Nova wheels/alloys
Calling all nova boy-racers!....
Whats the widest size wheels you can fit on a mk1 nova, WITHOUT having to modify any of the arches? i know the SRi takes 14" 165 x 65 tyres. i've just got a crappy 1.2 merit (hatch) & particularly want to know if you can fit anything wider than 165, without them scrubbing the arches on full lock. sure i saw an add for some 185 wheels fitted to a nova. cheers for the advice conrod |

Just one question,Why would you want to spend money modifying a tin can of a car like a Nova anyway?

Perhaps more important than questioning someones automotive tast is to ask how fatter wheels might affect the handling? you will at least notice heavier steering and probably a greater tendancy towards aquaplaining.

Yeah, thanks mr.OVERSTEER. don't you think i know it's a sh*t car?! i only drive it because it's cheap to run/insure. it's been a very humbling experience driving a vauxhall of any sort, let alone a nova!

I've driven a Mk.1 Nova (even though I don't have a license but with L plates on and someone alongside me!) It felt such a flimsy car to drive ,I say that along side a Mk.3 Fiesta. But I have driven a VW Polo (1983 I think) that was a fantastic car to drive, and also the Skoda Favorit (Joke you may!) that wasn't a bad car to drive either they're very cheap cars as well so IMHO I think they're are other good cars that can be had for very little money and are very good to drive. thats what I have to say about the whole thing, sorry if I caused that much offense

Bluebottle's right - there's no guarantee that a fat set of boots is going to have the effect you expect on a car. Best to do some reading up on what is the optimum size, rather than the maximum possible.
Also bear in mind that if insurance is a factor, a trick set of wheels will make an insurer sit up and take notice. Not only for the value if they are tasty alloys, but also because some insurers will class you as a "modified car" and load your premium. In all seriousness, it might be worth saving the money now, and reassuring your underwriter that you're a good risk, then putting something towards your first performance car a couple of years down the line. Sorry to be so prosaic. |

Good advice Tim- I built up some 'No Claims' with my first car, a Mk3 Escort 1100 Estate- then I got a Dutton (It had 205's on it when I got it- as recommended in the build manual- I put 175's on it to make it driveable on damp roads, as recommended by the Owners Club!!)

the max wheel/tyre width is 6 inches. Why not buy a set of the Nova Gsi/Sr three spoke wheels, or the Nova Luxe (Mk2 car, wheel looks like a BBS one off a Golf Gti) The Luxe ones I had on my Nova and looked ok.
A couple of cheap mods for you, cut the air box off before the hot air flap on the exhaust manifold. It is very important to keep the hot air off the manifold going into the air box. I did this mod and it worked well on my car. Try getting hold of some Nova SR or GSI springs (just them not the dampers, go for some aftermarket Koni or something) as they cost me £5 for the set and transformed the handling. Also if you can afford it change the exhaust bck box, cost £60 and alot more power and sounds 1000% better than before. other than that keep everything clean tidy and running ok, Plugs in good order, HT leads ok, timing , oil etc etc,. Hope you have as much in a nova as much as I have had/ am having (got a GSi atm ), ps change the brakes, they are VERY BAD!!!! trust me I know |

Without arch mods, the largest are 195/45/15. This also has been proven to be the best for handling etc. But as Tony Simpson said, CHANGE THE BRAKES. I did on my old car, it had Astra fronts, and a rear axle conversion with Astra discs. But no need to go that far in a 1.2! I had them on 210bhp 2litre. Felt like the car was going to snap in half! Do not recommend it, handle like dogs!

How must a 250bhp astra turbo engine make a nova handle!!!
I am also sure someone stuck the 2.5 litre V6 up in the front of a Nova, he must be mad. If I ever did a nova it would have a rollcage (increase the stiffness) and stick the biggest brakes under 15inch alloys. The engine would be the 1.6 16 valve with around 200bhp. It is a lighter engine than the 2litre and uses the same engine mounts as the 1.6 that is in the GTE/GSI. Easy That is if I did a Nova, I have/am being converted to a Rwd or 4wd car for my next one, more fun needed Last edited by Tony_Simpson; 22 Apr 2002 at 19:56. |

Try these guys, they made the awesome Japanese-style Nova.

Just to say cheers for all your advice. I'm purchasing a set of 15" cavalier gsi alloys this evening.
i've checked and apparently they fit (just!) without any arch work. they've got a nice set of pirelli boots on them too (195/50s) though i'd best start working out to be able to steer and avoid puddles!! ;D |
