Le Mans Photos

I have a couple of photos I wanted to post about two months ago, but the recent debate over the Caddy's looks forced me into action - here's my response to anyone who says the car was ugly!

On an entirely separate note, can someone tell me about the view from the pits grandstand? I've seen various photos of cars from above the pit stalls - are these taken from the hospitality boxes or from the balcony of the pits grandstand? The reason is that i'm going back to Le Mans (first time last year) with just my camera for company, so I need to make sure that wherever I am, i can get some good photos.

Unfortunately, I may not be able to post for a while, so thanks in advance to anyone who responds!

gi_gav, two years ago, I ended up at Le Mans having had my request for a photo credential rejected just prior to my departure for France. I tried to make the best of a bad situation and managed to get some decent photos of a rainy event. Please note, however, that I was shooting with a 600mm lens. You'll need lllooonnnggg glass to get similar images from the spectator areas.

Good luck!

Those are some fantastic images!!
I'll need all the luck (and sunshine) I can get cos I'll be shooting at a best of 300mm f5.6, 500mm f8 (mirror lens) or the same lenses with a teleconverter...

I think the pin sharp head-on photos are out, given those speeds. Incidentally, where on the circuit can you get such views? - I thought that safety measures meant that you don't really get many head-on spectator areas these days.

The head-on Bentley was shot on the spectator hill in the Esses before Tertre Rouge. A bit of cropping was necessary to make the car look as close as it does. I seem to recall using a shutter speed of 1/250 (or thereabouts) at f4, with Fuji Sensia II 100 pushed one stop to 200. In better lighting, you'll have no problem freezing the cars.

Many thanks Bob, I'm trying to absorb all the advice I can at the moment!
Maybe its an 'obsessive-compulsive' thing, but half the anticipation of Le Mans for me is in planning what shots i want to get throughout the race...

I am now sorry to say that I was one of those saying that the caddy was ugly, but I admit, I was talking out my a***, and henceforce retract all the comments I made

333sp is one of my favourites. I am not worried about seeing it - I just want to hear it - the Ferrari V12 was one of the best sounds in recent years.
