Speed should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Is Shanghai Circuit a power-track?

KM/h
305 before Turn 1
291 before Turn 6
265 before Turn 7
284 before Turn 11
326 before Turn 14

It's a traction circuit, rather than an absolute power one, according to the Renault technical preview. They made it sound rather like it would suit the Renault car.

Kirk has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Yes, I got the same impression Glen.... hope they are right.

BAR are strong more or less everywhere though Kirk. And they have the new front brake torque gizmo (not much benefit at Monza, could be crucial here). And they have the third car (good for a circuit that is all new).

Gonna be tight.

Yep, that long straight is particularly worrisome from a Renault viewpoint. They were downplaying that, was it just wishful? Perhaps so.

Monza wasn't a nightmare for Renault on the straights, but they did have the car trimmed right out for low drag - they aren't going to be setting it up anything like that here.

McLaren will be strong too.

You're getting me worried now. I'd hate to see Renault get blown away by BAR and rain on JV's parade. When you read those speeds posted above for the various straights it sure seems to favour the Honda. As for the new BAR tourque gizmo, there are varying viewpoints on the effectiveness of such a system. Rest assured, the engineers will be earning their money more than ever this week.

i think renault struggle more with a long straight if its preceded by a medium to fast corner, and there isn't any where like that at china. they get such good traction and low down grunt out of slow corners that they can hold of cars with a higher top speed down the straights,(this is just based on my observations of the year so far).

Renault aren't a million miles off the pace with their engine anyways.....safe to say, it has been a pleasant surprise this year.

The BAR seems to like it well enough - congratulations to Ant for yet another stellar performance.

JV is probably not so overjoyed though!
