The Americans also understand that if you want the safety car out, you want it NOW!!! So send the signals all directions as quickly as possible.
It was interesting at Mondello for the Porsches. Accident approaching the 1st corner, one left damaged at the edge of the track. American system: flags our straight away at all posts, drivers slow, safety car is waiting at the end of the pitlane to come out once the leader comes into view, marshals can start working immediately. The way it actually happened: Drivers continue to race, flags get them at the start line. Two nearly collide as the second car lifts and catches out those following. Later cars continue to lock brakes past the incident because they haven't seen a flag until they reach the line and anyway they want to catch up to the pack. Marshals waste two laps before they can get to the indicent, and it wouldn't have been safe to be with the vehicle if the driver had need attention. Why can't we learn? |
