I notice on reading the ad, that the engine is described as "1 Cyl"...............

Hm..................

Severe economic slump in Oz at the time? Seven plug leads disconnected?

Seriously over priced. Ultimately the market will pay what the car is worth as it always does.

I'm sure I've seen that car advertised many times over an extended period - either it has sold & the new owner is looking to "cash in" on the current market or that reflects the validity of the asking price.

Obviously being "#1" would add substantially to the price (& of course you would need to be very satisfied this was actually the case!), perhaps 50%?

Apart from reasonably heavy steering at slow speeds, these are fantastic cars to drive (albeit I have only driven a non-HO XW GT) and a lot of fun.

A 30+ year old Ford for more than the latest baby Lambo or Faz?

Cheaper to own really, servicing much easier & no depreciation. At that level though they can barely be regarded as a car though - ie as something you can drive / means of transport.

the bloke who bought that would have to be happy now, the market is falling that quickly that I hate to think how much less that would be worth now.

Well the ad is still there, now asking AUD$550k, which I am not surprised to see. I agree the market seems to be returning to more sane & sustainable levels - depending on the economic climate it may drop further!

It's the late 80's all over again and prices are going to drop like a rock.
