Oh dear. This could be messy. But the bottom line is, as it has always been, that you can’t force someone to work for you against their will. The rest is just details.

i feel like there is a joke in here somewhere.
Mclaren job posting: Desperately seeking engineers who no longer wish to build cars around Honda engines. Job Title: 2019 Scapegoat Qualifications: no longer willing to drink Red Bull. |

You need to look deeper... Anyone who seriously believes Alonso was the sole problem in 2007 is wide of the mark. Sorry for going OT... |

I seem to remember a couple of occasions where McLaren have Announced that they have signed Red Bull personnel, only for RB to persuade them to stay. Be interesting to see how this one works out.

Helmut Marko is talking tough over Key’s contract. I hope James has a big garden - he might have plenty of time to tend it coming up.

McLaren 2019
Zak Brown says Sainz could be on their shortlist. Will Alonso stay? Will Vandoorne keep his seat? Is Norris ready for F1? So many unanswered questions. Mark Webber said on C4’s coverage in Austria that he was sure Alonso wouldn’t be around, and they’re supposed to be good mates, aren’t they? Will the Spaniard decamp to the US, with or without McLaren?

I think McLaren could do a lot worse than sign Sainz, although my fear is he will do no better than Vandoorne

I’ve been disappointed by Vandoorne. Sure, the car hasn’t been great, but he’s not so much as touched the Spaniard, even occasionally.

He did well in Hungary till his car broke down, not far behind Fred before that. But he needs to get more results soon

The season's not been great for Vandoorne so far.
If (part of) his slump is due to car/chassis problems (even Alonso suggested as much), then the team will probably see that as a valid excuse, I guess. Anyhow, he has a new chassis now, so he should be closer to Alonso now. If not, he may be in trouble. |

Another thread for the sake of it?
Driver placement should be covered in silly season, and if not there is already a McLaren thread. |

I fear that for McLaren 2019 will be a lot like 2018.The senior technical departures of late, combined with the blocking of James Key's move to Woking effectively means that the design team responsible for this year's car will be fumbling into the future. If they had correctly identified the design philosophy to adopt prior to the beginning of August, which isn't too likely, they might by now have finalised the layout of the 2019 chassis.Something that has to be done by the middle of September at the latest in order to build the car on time and begin the process of testing and refinement.
Renault will certainly improve their engine, but so will the others. Drivers is an interesting area of speculation. How much more mediocrity can Alonso stomach? He presumably has enough money for a very comfortable future and might want to race with a chance of winning. It would be no shock if he did Indianapolis next year and he has a good bit of sportscar racing to do.Does he need to make up the numbers on the F1 grid?Stoffel VanDoorne hasn't given the impression of being more than a journeyman in spite of possible chassis issues and I would think his best chance of being retained is if Alonso moves on.Is Carlos Sainz significantly better?Until Alonso decides what he wants to do there are few things likely to happen. |

Vandoorne looked like much more than a journeyman in the lower formulae. But the transition to F1 seems to have proved very difficult.

It’s not an uncommon problem when someone comes through the ranks always having been in the best car. Can make them look better than perhaps they are.

If you mean: he was always with the best team, then I don't think that's true either. He was in FR3.5 with Fortec, which was 3rd in the teams championship the year before. In his first year in GP2 he was with ART, which was only 5th the year before. It's not like he joined the established and runaway champions, and ran away with the prize. |

Christian Sylt seems to have raised McLaren hackles by reporting that Ojjeh is leaving McLaren with:
McLaren unhappy with ‘misleading’ Ojjeh report. http://www.f1reader.com/news/mclaren...n-ojjeh-204804 Apparently to do with the McLaren restructuring, and Ojjeh remains on the main board but not on those of some of the subsidiaries. |

It does seem a pretty straightforward case of nothing to see here.

Zak Brown has been stressing the need for experienced drivers as they rebuild the team, which would seem to put the kibosh on Norris’s hopes of promotion and might cast doubt on Vandoorne’s future, especially if his results don’t improve. Alonso/Sainz? Though I also read rumours that Räikkönen might go back to Woking,
