2014 Historic FF Calendar

As I can't find out how to edit the Silverstone thread to say here's the calendar of our HFF's....soooo then, here's the calendar.....

This was sent out to all last month. Might be of interest to some of you wanting to join us. The HFF's may increase the amount of two-race meetings this year too.
Those home and abroad are welcome to join us for one race without having to pay membership to HSCC after that you have to pay £150 for competitors membership.
We do get fully booked though so unless you have full membership there may not be any guarantees.
If you are from other countries; Pertti Kiiverii and Roland Svensson come over to race with us from Finland & Sweden and have 'parking facilities' over here, we are sometimes joined by Ciri Pavesi from Italy and maybe Koichi Watanuki again and new boy Syuuichirou Nagakubo from Japan; they seemed to have fun with us and I'm sure they could have a chat with you if you are in their area.

We all try to respect the strengh of our cars and each other when we are racing - but race too. A balance we manage to acheive which seems to add to the fun not having to fix damaged cars.

Hope to see you at some of them. Dick Dixon, Drivers Rep.

HSCC reveals 2014 calendar

The Historic Sports Car Club has taken the wraps off its 2014 calendar, which is headlined by high-profile events on the Silverstone and Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuits and a repeat of the Thruxton historic event over the Easter Weekend.

In total, the club will organise 18 days of racing for its members next season, which continues the steady increase from 15 in 2010 and 17 in 2013.

Season highlights include the International Trophy on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit (17/18 May), the Autosport three-hour meeting at Snetterton (7/8 June), the Historic Super Prix on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit (12/13 July), the Croft Nostalgia Weekend (2/3 August) and the Oulton Park Gold Cup (24/25 August).

The Thruxton Easter event will benefit from the later date for Easter in 2014 (19/20 April), while the Wolds Trophy meeting at Cadwell Park moves to a new mid-summer date (21/22 June) and will again celebrate Formula 3. The Autosport Three-Hour meeting at Snetterton will have a fresh look as the main race is likely to focus on GT cars from the Guards Trophy while the sports-racing cars have a separate race over an extended duration.

The Brands Hatch Historic Super Prix will avoid a clash with the Goodwood Festival of Speed, while the traditional September date on the Indy circuit at Brands Hatch will grow to a two-day event. The Anglo-French Weekend will feature a number of French historic racing categories.

“I believe we have a perfect calendar for next season,” said HSCC Chief Executive Officer Grahame White. “Our members will be able to race on all the major UK tracks including the Grand Prix circuits at Silverstone and Brands Hatch.”

The provisional HSCC calendar is:
Sun 6 April Donington Park (Season Opener)
Sat/Sun 19/20 April Thruxton (Easter Revival) HFF X 2 race
Sat/Sun 17/18 May Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit (International Trophy)
Sat/Sun 7/8 June Snetterton (Autosport 3-Hours) HFF X 2 Race
Sat/Sun 21/22 June Cadwell Park (Wolds Trophy) HFF X 2 Race
Sat/Sun 12/13 July Brands Hatch GP (Historic Super Prix)
Sat/Sun 2/3 August Croft (Nostalgia Weekend) HFF X 2 Race
Sun/Mon 24/25 August Oulton Park (Gold Cup)
Sat/Sun 27/28 September Brands Hatch Indy (Anglo-French Weekend) HFF X 2 Race (?)
Sat 18 October Silverstone National (Finals Day)

Dates for individual championships and series, including the Historic Formula 2 Championship, Martini Trophy and Super Touring Trophy will be announced shortly. Club members will also have the opportunity to race at Spa-Francorchamps during the Classic Six-Hour meeting (19-21 September).

In addition, the HSCC will once again be organising the racing element of several key events in 2014, including the Donington Historic Festival (3-5 May), the Silverstone Classic (25-27 July) and the Walter Hayes Trophy (1/2 November.

Going by enquiries to date we have another EIGHT entries to add to our list of HFF drivers. We know we have lost Mike Bromley who fancies a posh road car instead. If you have an Elise or Porsche you can have his beautiful Merlyn.....

Another enquirer is after a Lotus 51. Anyone got one?

First Race of the Season.

First of our races for the season went well at Donington. As always at a long circuit and especially with a good few new guys we were strung out a bit but most had a battle. Updates here.

Here's the video of the race courtesy of Josh Barrett http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIsVaRc8uVY and this is Josh's web site

The Silverstone Race was sponsored by Drive Train Manufactururers Bailey Morris
www.baileymorris.co.uk/ and we had 39 starters. Our newsletter is out (the remainder of which you can read on our website).

A brilliant race for almost all matching a terrific race programme by the HSCC.

(The race video will soon be on the website http://www.historicff.co.uk/?page_id=89)
The brief and official report from our Magazine editor/PR man Paul Lawrence;
“With over 400 cars competing across 14 races on the full Silverstone Grand Prix circuit in
glorious sunshine, the HSCC’s International Trophy meeting was a great success (17/18
May).
Rising star Michael O’Brien turned in an exemplary drive on his home track in the HSCC
Historic FF1600 Championship to score his first championship victory. He was able to
edge clear as Benn Simms and series returnee Westie Mitchell had a great battle for
second, which went to Simms after Mitchell had a late spin at Brooklands when trying to attack once more. Max Bartell nipped through to complete the podium from a 39-car field”.
……….But only we really know everything else that went on (if that sounds like an early
excuse for a bad report..it is)... The field of cars was so big, the circuit too made it
impossible to comprehend the whole excitement going on behind everyone's wheel.
Almost all had a tale to tell and to report them would take hours of boring typing even
though the end result would be exhausting in its excitement. continued....

Snetterton Autosport 3 hour. Sunday HFF races.

I do hope Josh Barrett - our video/commentator man - can capture the incredible races for this event. The first race was described as " THE best this year", the 2nd race was even tighter than the first...!

As reported by Paul Lawrence HSCC editor "However, it was the Historic FF1600 Championship that delivered the greatest excitement. In the opening race, Max Bartell (Merlyn Mk20) beat Benn Simms (Jomo) by just a fifth of a second, but in the later race it was almost a dead-heat as Simms beat Westie Mitchell (Merlyn Mk20) by the smallest of margins: just a thousandth of a second! Bartell was third, only four-tenths of a second behind in a thrilling finish."

The report missed out that EVERYONE had a terrific time, good, clean racing throughout the grid always helps especially when you are loading a COMPLETE car back on the trailer...!

Terrific driving by all. Can't wait for the Vid.......

Josh Barrett did indeed do our race at Snett justice, see round 6 on our website.

Cadwell was another cracker and although he wasn't there he'll be trying to do a remote editing job from those who have sent him in car footage.

He will be filming at Brands this weekend (July13th) where Old meets young again in the form of Tiff Needel, we hope he has a good time with us. He may even come in the top five!

If you can't see us live you can catch up with us later. Good viewing folks. It is better through your own windscreen than the TV screen though......

Two new to the series are racing and the grid is looking like everyone will fun.

Grand Prix Circuit at Brands meant we were a little strung out in parts but the front runners gave it their all. Sam Mitchell was leading until he tripped over lapping a back marker who was losing it down Paddock Hill bend on the last lap. Micheal O'Brien chased by Callum Grant took the lead. Conditions were a little slippery after morning rain and it led to an occasional off for a couple of runners.

Josh Barratt was there to capture it. His coverage for both races at the previous Cadwell meeting is excellent - even though he wasn't there!!! Well worth a look folks..

Here's a link for more information on our series if you have an eligible pre 1972 car.

link to the membership form.
http://www.hscc.org.uk/images/Member...Form_Blank.pdf . Please
complete it and send it to the office.
Annual membership is £150. You will also need to register to a championship (HFF) by using the following form
http://www.hscc.org.uk/resources/Cha...ion%202012.pdf and
sending it in together with your membership application.

You can of course have a one day membership for £20 giving you a one-off race at one meeting in the year.

Finally the club has a useful website at http://www.hscc.org.uk/ for all
forms/info.........and the Formula Fordsters have a simple little website at
www.HistoricFF.co.uk <http://www.historicff.co.uk/>

Next up is the Nostalgia Event of the North at Croft 2/3 August. As of 3 days ago we have two spaces left to fill the grid so there will quite a sight of us on track.

There will also be quite a sight of most of us off track too. Squadron Leaders and ground mechanics will be parading at this post-WWII re-enactment event.

For the points table it is hotting up at the top, there's a number of drivers who are in for a shout for a trophy and the next couple of races will be important for them. Meanwhile, those behind will be having fun anyway!

Gold Cup at Oulton Park after this if you don't catch us at Croft. DD

Great time at Croft, wet then dry race, if you want to see the action go on our website.

We are at Oulton Park this Monday Bank Hol 25th Aug. One race this time but excellent circuit - one of the best.

A few weeks until Brand Hatch with a two-race programme for us and a chance to see the French FF in action for a brilliant programme with our Euro neighbours coming over.

See HSCC site for more info.

Oulton Park.
40 of us had a great spread courtesy of Barbara & Stuart Dix the night before - the tastiest of curries and sweets. Not many were looking forward to a wet race after a wet practice but for most it was another of those Formula Ford races....Absolutely Brilliant!

A lot of videos were downloaded and there'll be an equal amount of action.

Oulton Park Gold Cup - 23-25 August 2014.
To get to Brands Hatch for the northern boys is a chore - because of the
last bit - the M25.
To get to Oulton Park if you are a southerner is a pleasure - because of the
last bit - the countryside.
To be in a beautiful park at the end of the journey and then to race in it too
is a bonus and a rare pleasure.
To travel all that way then trip over your own trailer and break your arm would not
make a good weekend...........It happened...Chris Sharples- get well soon! We
are thinking of you and what a shitty Bank Holiday you've just had!
The circuit makes the racing brilliant too but Bank Holiday Monday was
miserable, practice was wet with no let up, the race was going to be wet & grotty
too. Could the circuit make up for the damp atmosphere.
Yep, it could and yep, it did.
But before we go on to the race, someone who came pole in all our books was
Barbara Dix. The finest Malay and Indian Curries were laid on at our soiree the
evening before. None of your slapped sausage in a bun affair this, a proper sitdown
with table cloths! Thanks go to Barbs and Stuart for laying it on and also
to a few other ladies too; we are grateful for those who prepared and also most
importantly to Barbara for clearing up. Ladies you do us proud. From us all - a big
thank you. A really big thank you! The sun shone on us that evening then the
clouds decided to open up all night.
QUALIFYING was interesting with most of us not knowing where the grip was or wasn't...
Those who did were John Murphy (who also joined up with us at Croft from racing with the
NWChallenge and Classic FFs) and found Pole by half a sec in front of Benn Simms (in his
Alexis after his Jomo fell to bits at Croft), Callum Grant was another half a second behind him
and, followed rather indecently rapidly by a front engined stranger in the form of Michael
Mallock's er, Mallock, fourth on the grid.
Creator/racer Uncle Mallock (Richard) was in the crowd to witness too. It looked a bit special
and I'm not too sure if the 1969 Mallock MK9 was still in it's original spec - with the famous
Mallock International Racing concern behind it, it certainly had been cared for in the past 40-
odd years.
Long distance hill-runner Stuart Baird (in his 60's) was in fifth and led youngsters, Robert
Wainwright, Alistair Littlewood, Max Bartell with James Buckton next and Pertti Kiiveri
(of equal years), who loves the circuit, rounding the top ten.
Historic Formula Ford
in association with Avon Tyres
Newsletter 9/14
The rest of us who guessed where there was grip and assumed where there wasn't (most of
the track) took our order in various stages of courageousness... and it still rained on...not hard,
but that annoying light saturating rain...
THE RACE.
Liverpudlian John led the way but not without a serious chase from ex-champs Benn and
Callum. Benn's start not as good as the Mallock dropped him to 4th. In the next two laps
Benn rises to 3rd then 2nd passing Callum, Michael's Mallock is 4th. John, Benn, Callum
run sometimes HALF a second apart - crowd are on their feet.....
Meanwhile Pertti & Stuart blow their chances at attacking the young folk by spinning first lap...
Lola-shod Brian Morris and Stuart Dix's Cooper-Chinook take over their role in the chase for
the top ten. A race-long battle then ensues with Alistair, Max; in front with James Buckton
chasing Robert Wainright while the first four are putting it on and giving the commentators
apoplexies... Apparently Marcus Pye went a bit squeaky...
It wasn't just them he could have got excited about, by lap 5 whole groups were having what
you might call illicit fun (you certainly couldn't get this amount of enjoyment in a legal way
normally), leader of a pack was Roland Svensson chased by Alex Meek, Kevin Stanzl, the
catching-up pair of Baird & Kiiveri, Andrew Mansell, Mike Wales and Greg Thornton (the ex
HFF but now big V8 driver borrowing Rachel Arnold's car for a bit of nostalgia).
There were some shenanigans in the group behind them too where Danny Stanzl & Andy
Wiggins were staying off the attentions of a crowd of cars including James Lovett (before he
decided to leave us for a muddy patch somewhere), David Innes, Roy Sergiejew (we call him
Polish Roy for ease..), Roger Arnold, yours truly (car behaving itself at last..), Gary
McVeigh and Cliff Gray. To say mixing the challenge of staying on in the wet with fighting your
own car, the car ahead and behind, trying to keep up or ahead and/or go past another and all
at the same time was 'rather involving' is a total understatement. It went against all we thought
it was going to be before the race - such is Oulton Park...
One of our new boys this year (as well as Nigel Adams and Keith Hazel), is Nic Arden and
on lap 3 had another moment of his Brands Hatch sort of luck (the negative kind) when an antiroll
bar broke (instead of being hit by the leader at Brands) taking him off into the tyres again...
Meanwhile up front, Benn falls back! A small moment perhaps but it drops him to nearly 10
seconds behind scouser John, but there's no relief for Mr Murphy as he's too busy with the
Mallock just 2 seconds off his tail and Callum a little way back just ahead of Benn. They both
catch up with the leading two but not before Michael's Mallock takes the lead off John...
It was as if it was waiting... the dark shark-looking Mallock had been lurking behind ready to
pounce. A front-engined car in the lead? What is the world coming to? This is a first-time win in
43 years apparently, sounds like they've prepped it about right - took their time!....................
Gold Cup then goes to Michael Mallock, John Murphy 2nd and Callum third.
Danny Stanzl received his Gold Cup for Novice Class and a bit of congratulations went to
everyone for a class act in such conditions. Mary Arnold's cake went down a treat at the
presentation too, thanks Mary!
We said goodbye to Pertti for this season, it seems hibernation comes early for his long winter
in Finland and Nic Arden received a commiseration award with a set of tyres from our
sponsors -Avon. (Nic and Judy send their sincere thanks for all the kind messages and words
of encouragement and for the support both on the day and by phone afterwards).
Callum's chase for the championship is now over, Benn has won it! His fourth at Oulton
clinched it but Boy it has been a fine showing of racing between the pair of them. Good to see
and good to be involved with them.
Well done Benn Simms. HSCC Historic Formula Ford
Champ of 2014.
With two rounds to go we hope for as much fun but without the rain maybe?
As well as quite a few joining us this year (three more will be joining us at Brands and
Silverstone Final as a precursor for 2015) we've had news from two who have left us, John
Crowell decided to sell his Merlyn for some other form of transport and Mike Bromley our
curly-haired west country boy. He sent us a nice letter - yertiz!
"Well its farewell to my lovely Merlyn 11a which I sold to Matthew Wrigley. So its no more
HSCC racing for the moment.
I would just like to say what a wonderful 'life' experience I've had since 2003, when I started
racing with HSCC. I think the HSCC has a brilliant bunch of people and it was the camaraderie
and fun that made it extra difficult to decide to stop racing and sell the Merlyn. Ok, I was only
doing the odd couple of meetings a year and was steadily moving back to the rear of the field,
however I have enjoyed the parc ferme banter, the friendliness and hospitality in the FF
paddock and Dick and Andrew's post-race get together.
Thank you HSCC for 11 years of enjoyment. I will still try and get to watch some of the local
meetings. Also hope I may share a drive in racing an A40 or someone kind would give an old
man a thrash in a F5000??" Cheers, Mike Bromley
Series co-ordinator Andrew Mansell has been working hard at HSCC Board meetings into
shaping our series into something we asked for at our mid-season Driver's meeting. Our end of
season meeting is coming up, let me or him know if you have anything you would like to put
forward soon please. If you can help out any time we'd like to hear from you.
HFF French Entente Cordiale Meeting at Brands next.
Its meet-the-neighbour-time with our French cousins invading a part of Kent again, we'll see
who gets it in the eye this time.....
Regards, Dick Dixon Drivers' rep.
Coordinators Corner (Boring Bit!)
Driving Standards: The weather was rubbish but the racing was brilliant… except perhaps
for a few… A couple of our fellow drivers mentioned that they had experienced some overly
aggressive driving by colleagues who had driven them towards (and off) the edge of the track
to defend a position. We encourage drivers to firstly talk the matter over with the other driver
involved, however we should all be reminded that this type of driving (or driver) has no place in
our Championship.
Next race – Brands Hatch - Championship Double Header: With the most track
time of any HFF meeting for the whole year, the grid is filling up rapidly. With three weeks
to go there are only 3 places left on the grid. If you don’t want the uncertainty of being a
reserve, please get your entry in NOW. Our French Formula Ford friends will be at Brands
and we will be inviting them to join us in an “after dinner get together” on Saturday evening.
Details to be worked out – so please keep Saturday evening free and details will follow.
Tyre Raffle: Again we will be holding a tyre raffle at Brands for all those on the grid.
Cakes: we have been very lucky this season with cakes being donated to the HFF Marquee
for the after race get-togethers, they are always very, very welcome after a tough race.
Silverstone Finals - HFF Championship Awards: at the Silverstone finals we will
again present our (tongue in cheek) awards for “Excellence”. Please let me know
a.mansellATbtinternet.com if you would like to nominate one of your fellow drivers for an
“excellence” award and for what reason! Could last year’s winners, (those who have not
already done so) please return their cups to me at Brands Hatch so that they can be prepared
for this year’s grateful recipients! In addition we have the annual drivers meeting……
Silverstone Finals - Drivers meeting: At the drivers meeting we will be electing the
officers and discussing/agreeing improvements to our championship and regulations.
· Championship Chairman Election: So far there has been no interest expressed in taking
over the Championship Chairman’s role at the end of the year, or in working alongside me
next year with a view to taking over at the end of 2015 (is it me!!). If there are no proposals
for the role then I am going to ask for volunteers to support me in specific areas in 2015.
Please let me know, a.mansellATbtinternet.com if you would like to help in any of the
three following areas:
o Eligibility: To keep an eye on our pool of cars and highlight to the Championship
Chairman where individual cars may not meet either the Formula Ford regulations or the
HSCC regulations. This will require both technical knowledge and the ability to research
regulatory issues.
· Paddock Facilities: To help to transport, erect and dismantle the paddock facilities
(awning, tables, flag, urn, BBQ etc), and to ensure that refreshments are available. This
may suit a couple who may not necessarily be involved directly in the racing.
· Marketing Materials: to develop and maintain (or totally upgrade) our elementary
website to include a facebook group (for members to use to call for parts, share
photos/news items, and generally chat amongst themselves). In addition to manage the
marketing materials (leaflets, flyers etc).
· Driver Representative Election: There are currently two driver representatives, Dick
Dixon and Peter Alexander. Dick will be standing for re-election however Peter will not
continue unless there is nobody to replace him. This role is critical to the smooth running of
the championship and involves doing whatever is required to help drivers to enjoy their
racing and to iron out any issues/problems. Please let me know a.mansellATbtinternet.com
if you would like your name to be considered for this important role.
· Proposals to improve our championship: if you have any ideas to improve our
championship or to improve our championship regulations in the interests of maintaining a
level playing field then please forward your ideas to me - a.mansell@btinternet.com and
Dick - jane.dikkoATvirgin.net and they will be tabled for discussion/voting at the drivers
meeting.
Next season: The discussion/negotiation for next season’s calendar is well underway and I
have made a strong bid for a number of double headers to make our journey more worthwhile.
We are considering having one of our Championship rounds at a Continental Circuit. (Don’t
worry if you cannot make it as we currently are able to drop the two lowest scoring rounds).
The favoured circuit seems to be Spa, for the 6 hour meeting in September (with Zandvoort,
Zolder, Dijon and Nurburgring coming highly recommended). It could be a fantastic weekend,
however organising a Continental Championship round successfully depends on two things
which are connected:
1. Getting invited
2. Getting enough cars that we don’t loose money (and I don’t get hung out to dry!)
The format is likely to be 1.5 hours track time: 30 minutes qualifying and 2 x 30 minute races.
There is likely to be additional practice time which may be purchased separately. I would like
to understand the extent of the support for this opportunity in order to gauge its viability, so
could you please let me know by return a.mansellATbtinternet.com (a) if you are interested
and (b) the maximum entry fee you would be prepared to pay for a Championship
Double Header at (say) the Spa 6 hour weekend. Please choose one of the following:
1. £450
2. £550
3. £650
4. £750
Australia: I have an open invitation from the Formula Ford Association in Australia to join
their grids at Bathhurst and Philip Island next season. I am in the early stages of getting
indicative prices for a return shipment of cars to Aus. Hopefully by the next newsletter!
Sponsorship: As soon as the 2015 calendar is finalised we shall again be offering individual
race event sponsorship (£350) for next season. If you have a particular meeting in mind then
get your name in early. Silverstone International has already been taken and I have interest
in the Gold Cup and Brands Superprix and what about Spa?? Please get in contact

27th - 28th September Brands Hatch Indy Circuit, The Anglo - French Motors Cup.
A friendly invasion of competitors, from the French, Classic Formula 3, Historic Formula Ford and the Maxi 1000 Championships, will take part in our Brands Hatch Indy circuit meeting. Extending to two days from the traditional one day, there will be double header races for all of the French Groups and in the Classic Formula 3 grids, the first race of the weekend will be for Championship points whilst the second will be for the honour of the respective countries. Will it be the Tricolor of France or the Union Flag of Great Britain, which will reign supreme in the Final head to head? The HSCC Historic Formula Ford, will also have a double header race and we will have full grids.

We'll let you know how good the racing was!

Championship Table.
OK Benn Simms is Champ but.....
Everyone elses points are safe at the moment?...No....
The battle is still on with Brian Morris 7 points away from chasing Simon Toyne but Simon wants 7 points to Pertti Kiiveri's 6th place. Pertti has gone home to Finland and Simon will get them in his absence if all is well. Callum Grant would like 36 points (50 points available!) to improve over James Buckton's 4th who has driven brilliantly in the latter part of this season and he, in turn, wants 6 points for the third spot of the missing Micheal O'Briens place. Callum is a favourite for front spot except the super fast Oulton Park winner Mallock will be in attendance and that may upset full points on the way of 2nd in the championship, currently held by our Cadwell winner Max Bartell who is hoping to keep the position - as I say - if all goes well.....no pressure boys...

If you're not there we'll let you know how good the racing was!

Paul Lawrence's brief report follows. A broader report will be on our HFF website (and video of course) at some point when time to spare!

The final Historic Formula Ford 1600 Championship was an absolute
barn-stormer as a superb 34-car grid delivered another fabulous race. In a
blanket finish, former multiple champion Neil Fowler (Lola T200) beat former
champion Callum Grant (Merlyn Mk20A) by 69-thousandths of a second with Mark
Draghicescu (Merlyn MK20) right behind. "There was a bit of peer pressure
from within the team to do this weekend," said Fowler, who last raced
regularly in the category in 2007. "I've had some great races but that was
awesome," said Grant.

The HSCC Historic Formula Ford
Championship Finals Meeting Silverstone
Saturday 18th October 2014
Going into the last round there were a number of positions to the
Championship that could and would be decided, it really didn't help
that there were so many people wanting the same ones!
How did it end? Well, here's HSCC Mag editor Paul Lawrence's brief
description of our race...
“The final Historic Formula Ford 1600 Championship was an absolute
barn-stormer as a superb 34-car grid delivered another fabulous race. In a
blanket finish, former multiple champion Neil Fowler (Lola T200) beat former
champion Callum Grant (Merlyn Mk20A) by 69-thousandths of a second with
Mark Draghicescu (Merlyn MK20) right behind. "There was a bit of peer
pressure from within the team to do this weekend," said Fowler, who last
raced regularly in the category in 2007. "I've had some great races but that
was awesome," said Grant”.
