Dunlop are testing WEC/ELMS tires no?

Purely coincidental timing perhaps, i imagine there's no conflict for any drivers

Presumably they're still working out how to make the car completely different with a set of stickers.

As far as I can tell the only new Ligier in North America is the one that will be PR1/Mathiason's, they might have brought ESM in because they have experience with WEC tires.

The fact that Nissan is saying they were working on the cooling and packaging first seems like a good idea. The reports from Daytona now are that the Mazda and Cadillac are having a small issue with things like that. Testing can help with that though so they may still have the leg up on the Nissan.

give lmp1 tyres size, a 50kg break and the possibility to use different engines restricted to 600hp as well (like GM 6.2L, or road/GT3 derivated) and private lmp1 class will be back again

They already have those options, but no one takes them up on it! I think the problem is there's not enough money put into a new car to properly develop it against the factory p1's.

"Dunlop chose Sebring Raceway in central Florida due to its climate and a mix of abrasive tarmac and smooth concrete. This mix of surfaces replicates the characteristics of many different circuits."

Must be some other Sebring. I have never seen any smooth concrete at the Sebring track in Florida. (BTW, English version for those of us who dropped out of high school and only read a little French: http://www.endurance-info.com/en/dun...ype-tyre-test/)

"In the Dunlop test, the new LMP2 cars were close to the 2012 WEC LMP1 pace (the last time WEC visited Sebring). The new LMP2 cars were consistently lapping around 1m 47s. In 2012 the LMP1 pole time was 1m 45.8s. (NB: The LMP2 pole time in the 2016 Sebring 12h, running to IMSA tyre regulations, was 1m 51.2)"

So ... another headline might have been, "Modern P2s still over a second slower than 2012 LMP1s."

Need to do a consideration:
2012 pole was set by a 2011 R18 TDI. The fastest private lmp1 qualified in 1.47.5 using wider and better michelin tyres, but very likely 50hp less.

If during 2017 qualifying, pole will be set in a range of 1.46-1.47, it would be already a huge achievement, 4-5s performance jump forward in just one year is amazing.

I am not---let me be clear on this---in Any Way complaining about the new DPi/P2 formula. Those cars are a series of huge leaps forward for the series.

If they are about as fast as the old rebellion Lolas ... well they swapped a 4.2-liter Gibson for the 3.4-liter Toyota motor (or a 6.2-liter stock-based Caddy engine.) I think we can assume better aero, so i am thinking that little boost in horsepower (top-end speed costs a lot of power) doesn't represent the top of the engines' ranges ... I assume reliability on par with the old motors.

Looking at how the cars performed at Daytona with just a few days' testing, I think (and I know I can be a bit silly in my optimism but I think in this case it is totally justified) that 2017 will be a season on par with much of ALMS and better than anything Rolex or USCC has provided so far.

Still ... i think it is a bit of PR to compare the cars to old P1 cars. The naturally aspirated, non-hybrid Peugeots and Audis of that era were exceedingly reliable and freaking Fast.

I recall watching the Audis and Peugeots and rebellions at Petit back then (2011) ... the other P1s were fast, but the Peugeots and Audis were in another realm.

I was halfway between T6 and T7 and the Audis and Peugeots (which were also very quiet compared to the rest) would almost leap into view and be halfway up the short connecting straight before I could turn my head to see them.

I assume they've dipped into the 1:46's. But will the conti's be at that pace vs the Dunlop? That's what I'm looking forward to seeing. I sure hope their new tire is a big step up and not just Dunlop's.

"Continental: the race tire that lasts like a road tire."

And performs about as well.

They build a tire that doesn't fall off over a stint ... for a series with pit stop rules designed to discourage double stinting.

I have often wondered if that rule isn't partly to help Continental - they sell a lot more tires and don't have to worry about making something that will last two or three stints. Certainly in a spec tire series ultimate lap time is low on the priority list for the tire.

DSC article about the Dunlop test in Aragon mentions Rebellion reaching a top speed of 220 mph (!) on the back straight with a very low drag DF, quasi le mans spec kit.

With that kind of speed, we should see the LMP1 get easily passed on the straights, even though they might outaccelerate LMP2s out of the corners. Will the ACO be okay with it?
