An accident like this brings us back to reality, our sport is dangerous and whilst we have improved it in this respect out of all recognition from my young days it is still dangerous and very very sad when fate conspires to take a life. I grew up marvelling at the exploits of John Surtees and read this news with a heavy heart

The thoughts of myself and my wife are with the Surtees family who will have many conflicting emotions today. Also with the organisers and marshalls/officials who had to deal with the situation. Lets us think what we can learn from it

There but for the grace of God

So sad to hear this. 18 is not a good age to go..

I'm so sad, it's the first time that a driver younger than me dies.

My thoughts are with the Surtess family.

What a terribly unfortunate accident. Seeing it on TV it was obvious that it was serious but still a horrible feeling when the worst was confirmed. My thoughs are with Sir John and his family of course but also with the other driver and with the marshals, both bank and rescue, who dealt with the scene. I hope you are all OK, if not do remember the assorted counselling services available to you, both official and unofficial.

Rest in Peace Henry.

RIP.

My thoughts are with the Surtees family and his friends. Also my thoughts are with the driver of the other F2 car for knowing his accident cost the life of another competitor.

Sad, sad news.

Such a shame, he looked so promising despite his young age, a terrible freak accident has claimed the life of a possible star.

it's a tragedy when any life is lost in motorsport but particularly so when it's a young life.

Another ironic twist is that Vittorio Brambilla was hit on the head by a wheel in the infamous start crash of the 1978 Italian GP whilst driving for Surtees, but he survived...

All depends on a number of factors. My dad worked on helmet design for the military and as a part time job in college I worked as a test subject on various types of helmets. Interesting all the science that goes into all that and sometimes something that looks innocuous can be quite serious. One issue as well is people are not fully grown until their 20's and the skull can still be weaker and not fully developed by the late teens which doesn't help.

Ultimately very sad about what happened and a totally freak accident. My prayers go out to the family and those involved.

Bryan Degerlund should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
During qualifying for F2, several drivers were given black-and-white warning flags for four wheels off the track at various corners. Following a Red flag, two drivers came into the pitlane before passing their flags, so I walked along the pitlane to show them. The first driver was defensive/argumentative, the second driver on my approach immediately nodded his head and gave me a thumbs-up. The first driver shall remain nameless, the second driver was Henry, as polite as ever.

RIP Henry.

Deepest condolences to John Surtees and his family. Also to the Clarke family.

A special thought to marshal Mike Kelly, his team and the medical services for their rapid response.

Henry Surtees RIP

Was at Brands on the Saturday as a spectator. Before I left I had a quick chat with both John and Henry and congratulated them on their fantastic result. It was great to see them both so happy and both were very accessible as ever. I was not at Brands on Sunday as I had to travel to the US for work. Was shocked to the core when I learnt the terrible news on the internet. We all love this sport so much but it can be so cruel. Rest In Peace Henry you will be sorely missed. All my condolences to John, Jane and family.

It seemed so unreal watching it live through esp2.
Such an unlucky tragic looks really for similar. I was convinced that Henry could not survived the tire impact
