Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but we wont be seeing qualifying tires here like we do at Le Mans. In the ALMS they start the race on the tires they use in qualifying. Correct?

unless the rules have changed, that is correct - cars are sent to the back of the class / grid (never really clear how that worked) for changing tyres... flat-spot them in qualifying and you could have a big penalty to deal with

Sugden's Portsche seems woefully slow... any ideas why anyone??

For some reason, WMP will not play Hindy's Radio Web on my mac...

And, as if by magic, this just popped up in my Inbox...

Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring
THURSDAY MARCH 16, 2006
Round 1 American Le Mans Series Pit Notes: Page 2
ALMS GT1/GT2 Qualifying (25-minute session):

Note: For those new to ALMS, all GT1 and GT2 cars record laps at any time within the 25 minute session.
Only one driver from the team can drive the car and is pre-designated before the session. That driver is not required however to be the first driver in the car for the race. The tires used on the car are marked, and must be on the car for the start of the race. The same procedure is used for the LMP1 and LMP2 classes.
Cars will lineup on the grid in overall qualifying order, not class order. The drivers of each of the 4 pole sitting cars will be available in the trackside conference room for interviews at the end of the LMP1/LMP2 session.

Records to beat:
GT1 Ron Fellows, Canada, Chevrolet Corvette C5-R, 1:57.052 (113.796 mph), March, 2004
GT2 Timo Bernhard, Germany, Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, 2:04.804 (106.727 mph), March 2004

At 2:38 pm, green flag.
At 2:43 pm, Pedro Lamy (#009-GT1 Aston Martin DB9) sets the fastest lap in class with a 1:56.441
At 2:43 pm, Spencer Pumpelly (#78-GT2 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR) sets the fastest lap in class with a 2:04.751 (new class record).
At 2:45 pm, Pedro Lamy (#009-GT1 Aston Martin DB9) sets the fastest lap in class with a 1:55.643 (new class record).
At 2:45 pm, Mike Rockenfeller (#23-GT2 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR) sets the fastest lap in class with a 2:04.486 (ncr).
At 2:46 pm, Ralf Kelleners (#62-GT2 Ferrari 430 GT Berli) sets the fastest lap in class with a 2:03.608 (ncr).
At 2:46 pm, Pedro Lamy (#009-GT1 Aston Martin DB9) sets the fastest lap in class with a 1:55.286 (ncr).
At 2:47 pm, red flag all. Peter Kox (#85-GT2 Spyker C8 Spyder Aud) into the wall hard at turn 15 after losing control at turn 14. The car is upright, but the rear of the car is off the ground hanging on the concrete.
At 2:48 pm, Michelin tire engineers report the air temperature is 85 degrees with at track temperature of 100 degrees.

(That's degreesF for all you Yewropeans who do degC !!)

At 3:04 pm, green flag. There will be 10 minutes left in this session.
At 3:11 pm, David Brabham (#50-GT2 Panoz Esperante GTLM) sets the fastest lap in class with a 2:03.563 (ncr).
At 3:14 pm, checkered flag.

Top three in class:
1: #009-GT1 Pedro Lamy 1:55.286
2: #007-GT1 Tomas Enge 1:56.030
3: #4-GT1 Oliver Gavin 1:56.770

1: #50-GT2 David Brabham 2:03.563
2: #62-GT2 Ralf Kelleners 2:03.608
3: #51-GT2 Gunnar Jeannette 2:03.671

David Brabham (#50-GT2 Panoz Esperante GTLM) earns his sixth class pole, the last at the 2003 Petit LeMans driving #80-GTS Ferrari 550 Maranello.
Pedro Lamy (#009-GT1 Aston Martin DB9) scores his first ALMS class pole.

Interesting session, I make the top 3 in each class as follows:-

LMP1
1: #1 Audi Alan McNish 1:45.828
2: #2 Audi Marco Werner 1:47.673
3: #20 Lola Guy Smith 1:49.531

LMP2
1: #6 Lucas Luhr Porsche 1:47.800
2: #7 Timo Bernhard Porsche 1:48.017
3: #33 Michael Vergers Courage 1:52.068

GT1
1: #009 Aston Martin Pedro Lamy 1:55.286
2: #007 Aston Martin Tomas Enge 1:56.030
3: #4 Corvette Oliver Gavin 1:56.770

GT2
1: #50 Panoz David Brabham 2:03.563
2: #62 Ferrari Ralf Kelleners 2:03.608
3: #51 Panoz Gunnar Jeannette 2:03.671

So the Porsche was on the pace of the Audi's then (how long before the ACO/IMSA try to slow it down)

Field's been doing 1.49's with their Lola P2, which should in theory mean 1.46's for the Dyson Lola P1's.

But problems for both.

A new P2 should be easily under 1.50, the P1's should be pushing for the mid 40's.

The difference was Audi and Porsche didn't have problems.

They're new cars. New to the team. They have to learn them. It'll take time. They probably wont be on Audi pace this weekend, which is disappointing.

Wonder how long the RS Sypders can go on a tank?

775 kg and less power should mean less consumption. Could they beat the fuel economy of the Audi diesel engine?

At least Dyson will have time to get on the pace againt the R8 for the next race or two.

BTW, I'm sure Dyson did 1.46/7 in Sebring testing a few weeks back.

Edit from DSC:-

'But despite not running in the ‘window’, James Weaver’s best time at Sebring, on the last day of the second three day test (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week), was a very impressive “mid to high 1:47”.'
