Vettel gets 5 place penalty
Yes I know it's only Monday! But because they are introducing a 'new' car,he has to start the race with a 'new' gearbox, because the one on the existing car doesn't fit the 'new' car.Bourdais escapes the penalty because he didn't finish the last race.

I'd love to see rules like this scrapped. The championship should consist of eighteen (or however many) separate Grands Prix, where anything that happens prior to each meeting is irrelevant. To be penalised for having a new gearbox is daft, as is the logic behind not then penalising his team-mate just because he didn't finish the previous race.

Maybe now Sebastien will finally score positively in the FF1 competition. A welcome boost by the FIA to the 20 odd teams who jumped on the Vettel bandwagon.

It supposedly has led to increased costs. I can't remember the exact details, but apparently more is being spent on bringing gearboxes for Friday practice. Presumably last season the gearboxes were used throughout the weekend. can't remember where I heard that either, if anyone else did, feel free to correct/expand.

Yes, theyre changing the gearbox rules to encourage teams to bring less gearboxes to a race. They currently figure with Friday not counting as part of the GP, so open from the gearbox and engine regulations, the teams bring a Friday gearbox, race gearbox, spare Friday gearbox and spare race gearbox. Theyre trying to make it so that if theres a gearbox failure on the Saturday, teams can use the spare Friday gearbox just for that event, and begin using a new unit for the next GP and still take the subsequent penalty. That way they wont need a spare race gearbox, and hence only need to take 3 per car, not 4.

Nice reward for Vettel finally getting through lap 1 without being involved in (usually someone else's) incident. Another indication of how daft some of the current 'cost cutting' rules are. How many teams have been saved by building 18 less gearboxes a year?
I suppose the only equivalent is a Manchester United player being banned from a game against Chelsea for being sent off against Liverpool - but that makes more sense than this. This is more like a player being banned for having stitches or ice-pack treatment between matches. |

In this case something should have been planned ahead by STR, except I think they wanted to bring it out last race, to work with the rules if they knew it wouldn't fit.
The rule had a good idea at its base, but the legal application has made the loophole a costlier part of racing instead of its intended role. I think the cost-cutting has a place but needs to be VERY carefully worded or eliminate Fri as a free day for the 2 cars in the field. |

Rules are rules. The other option would be constructor's points penalties for engine/gearbox changes, like the BTCC does. They used to dock driver's points for more than three "new" engines, but that led to someone finishing the season on negative points.
