There's no such thing as a pro driver who isn't educated.

I don't really get your point. You made the point that you need to learn about downforce to race the high end cars, and GT3 and LMP3 both provide that at various levels. It's also a proven working ladder now with several LMP3 drivers making their way to LMP2. It isn't really an issue with the explosion of GT3 and LMP3.

Sorry, but it is. If you worked with the proper P2 teams you would find they are very wary of drivers from the likes of FR2.0 (and now LMP3) because they have always found drivers who think they know all the answers but really don't. Very expensive for the teams.

god forbid they might actually be a silver driver instead of a gold masquerading as a silver and have to do some actual driver development...

Does F1 attract the best drivers? Yes.

Does F1 have THE best 20 drivers in the world? No.

And I don't believe F1 has ever had a field of the best of the best drivers.

In the case of one or two drivers yes!

I would be willing to bet that a few current WEC drivers could cut the mustard with the top guys as well.....

Well a lot of WEC drivers are ex single seater stars in the junior series and some are now combining it with Formula E

Aye, apples are better.

I'd say you'd need 1 or 2 WEC drivers too.

I do think the FIA needs to look at why successful GP2 drivers, even champions, are finding it so hard to break into F1. One problem, of course, is the lack of available seats, made worse by the closure of Manor, but we've now had two champions of what is supposed to be the official feeder series have to go off to Japan to continue to earn a living (albeit only for a year in Vandoorne's case; whether Gasly will get a seat in 2018 is another question).

That's a good point, suddenly Super Formula is now becoming like it's predecessors F.Nippon/Japanese F3000 in the 90s.

Maybe we need to reevaluate Super Formula. An article in Autosport last year reckoned it was the fastest form of motorsport outside F1 (faster than IndyCars), so perhaps it shouldn't be seen as oriental exile.
