@kurtiejjj: this is nearly right but i think the Ringshausen car is made by Bernd Ringshausen himself and is not made by Zakspeed i think this car was made from his 1976 Group 2 car. This car was bought from Zakspeed.

In April 1978 Ringshausen sells his car as a Zak-Escort not a Zakspeed-Escort!!

very good investigation Kurtiejjj !!!

RS1600 that are some very interesting photos you have posted again. And a very interesting ad.

If you read through the gt-eins thread on the zak escort, someone wrote that the Ringshausen car was used in the 1976 1000km at the nürburgring by Zakspeed as a genuine Gp5 car. I believe a pic was posted as well.

If you take a look at this: http://www.teamdan.com/archive/wsc/1976/76nurb1000.html According to these results this is correct and driven by Klaus Ludwig (D) Peter Hennige (D)
Siegfried Müller (D).

Also note the Zakspeed entered car of Finotto and Grano, (where the hell did that end up?)

However I am confused by the ringshausen ad as it says the escort has an engine tuned by Schrick, but Zakspeed livery is all over the car (if you take a closer look). I know Dr. Schrick did engine work for the Zak Capri Turbo cars. Perhaps he overhauled the customer Zakspeed engines?

Hi All,

I am now back in NZ from Moscow.

It is great to read all the new info here.

It is amazing to see all these photos and hear the correct history of the cars.

RS1600, Hello, are you saying there are only 3 Gp5 cars left now? I am sure that both the "Space Frame" cars are cut up and gone!! I also think now you mention it the Ringhausen car would have been built up from one of the Zakspeed Gp2/4 customer cars they built up, I think these were sold with 1800cc engines and were now as highley speced as the "Works" cars.

hello everyone

im michael, i own the croix-blanche built gr5 press car that was built for ford belgium.

i was just recently offered a finotto car, a used and abused mk1 that was bubble arched. never heard of a gr5 finotto until now.

michael

wanted to add : schrick is still to this day, a very capable camshaft manufacturer. he might have done more back then ?

@Kurtiejjj, this is the car from 1000km Nürburgring 1976 Hennige, Ludwig,Müller

and this is the Finotto-car from 1977, i dont know if he drive his MK1 or his MK2 at this race in 1976

@Gary, no, the Ringshausen car in the first picture is build together with Zakspeed for himself. He build it with a 1600 BDA engine because he drive with this car in the "Deutscher Rundstreckenpokal" in the class 1600 ccm.
The later Group 2 cars from Zakspeed are build with 1800-2000 ccm alloy-block-engines.

Ahhh, very interesting. It's propably due to the back wing that the car was entered as a Group 5 car at the 1000km N'ring as the rest of the aero pack is the same as the 1976 DRM cars.

The Finotto car seems to have slightly bigger arches, especially at the back and look at that huge rear wing!

they look about the same width on the finotto car, but the top is lower, making it look wider.

And RS1600 .. how come you picture uploader has loads of popup adverts.
have you tried flickr.com or photobucket.com

Ant is a brillient young man, full of enthusiasm, and has an eagerness to learn, always saying sorry when he thinks he's asking too many questions. (Ant you can never ask enough questions)
And has allready helped out on the Croix Blanche car.

strange front spoiler on the finotto...and the color scheme looks somewhat like garys car before restauration... !!??

what i am a bit confused with :

who apart from me and gary in NZ now still owns a gr5 ? and how many were every built ?

in my books there were 10 cars, 2 have been the famous spaceframe ones (that are both cut up and destroyed), 1 is my press car so theres 7 racecars remaining.

from them 7, 1 was destroyed in south africa wih a GAA engine in it....so remains 6....then we know garry in NZ has a real one....so down to 5 remaining ones...

anyone care to shed some light (maybe we can even get the VINS together?)

michael

below some pics of my car :

Very interesting photos; as reto_msport told me all the body parts are Zakspeed, same for the suspension bits?

10 cars? It seems more cars are getting known by the day. Any chance of a bit more information on the South-African car? And on all the other 10 cars in your book?

One other non-Zakspeed car is the one driven by Toine Hezemans, developed by GRAB, I'm sad to say but that was something quite different in terms of engineering and weight reduction against the Zakspeed cars. Sadly it lacked a LOT of power. It ended up in the Carribean being raced there for a few years but in the end crashed and scrapped.

Do we talk above the history of Group 5 Escorts in the DRM or above all Escorts with Zakspeed-Gr.5-silhouette?? Than we must add all Escorts from Denmark,Norway,Finland,Sweden and Nederland and, and, and !! A few years ago in Denmark drove some Group 5 Zak.-silhouette car in the spezial-saloon cars series. They looked as a Zakspeed-car but only from the outside.Inside they have BMW,OPEL or someone else engines and gearboxes and suspensions. This is the Preben Jessen Escort from Denmark i think the car is sold now!Take a look at the engine!

Great photos of the SA car. As I understand it the car in SA was the sister car to my car, which was left there after the Kylami race in 78.
It was raced there with great success by Ford Motorsport South Africa but was destroyed as you mention. Soon after a new car was built using parts supplied by Zakspeed and it was fitted with a GAA and again has very good history in SA. This car is now being rebuilt in Johannesburg. Although not an "Original" car it has a very real connection to the Zakspeed name.

There is some YouTube Zakspeed Escort and Capri footage - just type Zakspeed Escort or Capri in and up she pops. There's a few bits of footage of an Escort doing a hillclimb and the sound is rather good. The Capri is a particularly magnificent beast.

as i was told the SA car had a crash that was fatal to the driver. was it the driver above that lost his life in this very car ? are the pictures before or after its "revival" ?

I think to be called a Zakspeed Gp5, the car must have links to Ford. Zakspeed built the cars for Ford, therefore, they are "works" cars. The Croix Blanche car was was built for Ford of Belgium therefore is an official Ford car using Zakspeed parts. So i think it should be included in the 'Zakspeed' folder

This car that I built, shouldnt.

I built this using the the Nick Whiting bodykit, allthough it would be classed as Gp5 in the rules, is nothing to do with Ford or Zakspeed, If we could have got the Gp5 Zakspeed bodykit, we would have used it, but it still wouldnt be a Zak, as it wasnt comissioned by Ford, or Zakspeed

The Croix Blanche car is being rebuilt as Zakspeed would have built it, using as many pictures and as much infomation as possible from people who have contributed on this thread. Thanks must go to Gary (Zak65) as he has been very helpfull in this matter. Micheals original plan was to have one of my chassis under the Gp5 body. Untill he found the Croix Blanche car.
The inside would have looked like this ................

Very different to the Zakspeed cars

But now we have a car with Links to Ford and Zakspeed, it will be built as Zakspeed did, and will be used to show what great cars these Gp5's are, I hope that it will show the masses of Ford Escorts fans out there, that they were not just Rally cars.

Van der Merwe retires * South African Sarel van der Merwe, winner of the Daytona 24 Hours in 1984, has hung up his helmet. The 59-year-old called time on his career after winning the final round of this year's South African Wesbank V8 series two weeks ago. The decision ended a career dating back to 1967.

A drive in Gianpiero Moretti's Porsche 935 at the 1980 Kyalami 1000Km gave him a foothold in the U.S. IMSA scene and he went on to drive for a host of top sports car teams on both sides of the Atlantic. The highlight was the win in the 1984 Daytona 24 Hours in a March 83G.
