Leaked email regarding Virgin investing in a 20% stake in Manor, as reported in The Guardian http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76653

Based on its facilities and motorsports history, Manor would not normally look like a organisation ready for the jump to F1. Wirth is ex-March (founded by Mosley - the "M" stands for "Mosley"), and his previous foray into F1 via Simtek was a failure.

The allegation is that Manor Motorsports was used as cover to give a F1 place to certain people and that Manor GP is essentially a puppet organisation for them.

Wirth's Simtek experience isnt necessarily a positive. Virgin were not on board until after the decision was made.

if i recall, the '95 simtek was a pretty neat chassis that was capable of fighting for the top 10 despite having no money -certainly a cut above pacific & forti.
Wirth has been busy in the usa since then with (amongst other things) the le mans prototype acura.

Apparantly it may have been signed before.

Thanks to KA from the 'what the 3 teams think' thread.

Driver line up sounds to me to be well on the way, experienced #1, plenty of them about, and "joyful enthusiasm of a youngster"...... perhaps with some family money to back the enthusiasm?

We haven't heard from a team in 48 hours?

I may be only 15, but there must have been a time where you would only here from teams once a week in Autosport before the interweb came out and such like.

As Eddie Jordan has said, these team have left it late - they're going to have many, many sleepless nights. Rather than going out talking to the press, they've just got to crack on with it and let the current teams squabble over it all.

US F1 have announced that they'll be ready to roll this October - see here. I noticed one thing in the statement made by Ken Anderson...

"The Aragon facility is a fantastic facility, the people there are very nice, very helpful. It is a great place for winter testing, and we would like to have our drivers based there, or at Paul Ricard, and run all the time."

Does this mean that there will be no ban on testing in 2010 ?

Article 22.1 c of the 2009 sporting regulations.

"No track testing may take place between the start of the week preceding the first Event of the Championship and 31 December of the same year."

Also (currently) applies to 2010.

So testing is from Jan 1st to week before first race.

So 'run all the time' in Ken Anderson's language means circuit testing from 1st January 2010 through the beginning of March I guess.

Or stick drivers out there on the track all year round in something similar? I've always wondered why teams don't exploit the rules in that way. They could have test mule cars, with similar layouts, to test wings and such.

I wonder what the rules have to say about that.

That's exactly what I thought when the testing ban was introduced, and knowing what a canny load the F1 boys are have always wondered why no-one has done this? (Presumably there's an obvious and simple explanation?)

If your "Mule" looks like an F1 car (and what would be the point if it didn't),and it's your F1 car, then you are 'testing' illegally.

It is also a requirement that all cars that are testing be fitted with the FIA mandatory ECU which no doubt records distance covered (maximum 15,000 km).

The test mule idea has been floated before - remember the rumours that Peugeot's 908HY LMP1 testbed was really acting as a mule for Ferrari's KERS system in a deal brokered by Jean Todt? I think the powers that be are not foolish enough to let obvious mules slide - F1 teams are pretty high-profile organizations and would have a hard time hiding, too!
